Mission:
S2E1: The Skunil Incident
Location: USS Crazy Horse, Captain's Ready Room
Timeline: Day 39 at 1500
Cian, who generally remained on or near the Bridge whenever an away team was out, was working his way through the latest batch of reports when a thought occurred to him. And so, at his request, the Operations officer on duty sent a request for the ship's Chief of Security to report to the Captain's Ready Room.
Tahlin entered and saluted. "Sir, you wanted to see me?"
"Yes, Lieutenant, please come in," Cian said. He was seated at his desk, one hand curled around bottom edge of his ever-present tea cup, as he turned from reading a report to look at his Chief of Security. "Can I get you something to drink," he asked and, as though the thought reminded him, he took of sip of tea while he waited for her answer.
"No, Sir, but I appreciate the thought. I just had a light lunch with our new counselor." She sat. "What may I do for you, Captain?"
"I want you to go through the material brought back from Skunil," Cian said. "Both the visual stuff and the written records. We have a fairly clear picture of the events that transpired. The colonists looking for help in starting a mining venture and what happened afterward. What we need is your perspective. Does any of this match up with reports you've seen elsewhere? Are any of the individuals shown in the recording known to Starfleet?" Cian took another sip of tea, slow and measured. "If anyone on the ship has the expertise, its Security."
"Yes, Sir--I'll see to it personally. I don't mind doing the analysis... Regardless of what I find, I really don't like this... seven hundred people, gone..."
"I doubt anyone does," Cian said quietly. "What we need is a trail to follow. A way of determining what's happened to the remaining colonists. I'm hoping you can help with that."
"It will be my pleasure... I assume you'd like this as soon as possible? Top priority and all that?"
"And all that," he said. "Hopefully, there will be more from the away team. I'll make sure copies of all they find are sent to you as well."
"Thank you, Sir... Looks like I've got a date with a pot of coffee and a PADD." She rose, grinned, and saluted. "Am I dismissed to begin?"
"Of course," Cian said. "Let me know once you have the information and we'll meet again."
"my thoughts exactly, Sir."
[The Blue Parrot]
Hours later, Tahlin sat in the Blue Parrot, PADD in front of her, the viewport offering a calming view of space and the stars beyond. "Horta... Interesting," she muttered, looking at a graphic of the latest sensor sweep. "Thought they were only native to Janus VI."
"More coffee, love?" came the voice of the lounge's chef.
"You read my mind..." The Bajoran sniffed. "Do I detect favinit leaves in there?"
"Just a hint... I happen to know someone who specifically said you liked that."
Tahlin grinned at the readheaded human woman. "Its appreciated... Just have a lot of work to do."
"I know--call if you need anything." The chef withdrew, and Tahlin softly sighed.
"Wonder where you ran into K'Taal," she said softly to herself.
Frowning at the PADD again, she took a sip of the strong coffee. "What's this--an Orion? Name of Tiyla, or something? My Orion isn't great... No, Gilar--bloody languages..." She kept frowning. "Where's Intel when you need them?"
She tapped her commbadge. "Lae'Or to Intelligence."
"Niun here," he said. His desk was cluttered, as it always was, with the detritus that accumulated in the course of a day, sometimes a week. He kept his gaze trained on the report he had been reading; that was the joy of speaking over comms.
"I've got some odd data I'd like you to look over... Its from Skunil... Could use your insights. I'll be to the office in a few minutes, if that's acceptable?"
"Of course," Niun answered. "Intel out." He shut down the report he had been reviewing and cleared the more sensitive materials off his desk. At the moment, the Crazy Horse's Intelligence department consisted of himself. He'd been promised a second analyst but for the moment, he was on his own. And it could be said, that he didn't mind. He'd been on his own for quite some time.
[Intelligence]
A few minutes later, as promised, the Bajoran walked into the Intelligence department. "So," she started, "I think we've got a connection to the Orion Syndicate here... Look at this--the log shows a meeting with a Gilar, who's described as an Orion, about the mining... The name rings a bell, but I wanted to confer with you... Is it possible, however remote the chance, that the colonists we can't account for could have been taken into slavery by Orions?"
"It's at least possible," Niun said as he reviewed the log entry. "Didn't I hear there was some sort of a recording as well?"
"Right here.." She indicated a file. "I listened to it, but its fuzzy... The colonists at the meeting are speaking a dialect of Bajoran amongst themselves--I've translated that bit. The Orion I'm not sure of." She indicated some attached text. "It didn't sound pleasant, and its barely there... Think you can make any sense of it?"
"Give me some time with this," Niun said quietly. "I'll prepare a transcript and do some research on Gilar and his connections among the Orions. See what I can find."
"Thank you, Lieutenant... I'd best leave you to it, yes?"
"Yes," Niun answered, "I'll start work on it right away and be assured, you'll get a copy of my findings."
