Physical Appearance

Physical Description | Lean and well-muscled. The kind of physique one acquires from an active life and an understanding that the body is both tool and weapon in the fight to survive. He bears a runic tattoo on his left bicep which, when translated from his native tongue, indicates his status as a serf, family 512, status abandoned and a latticework of old scars on his back. While he can be serious, his smile when it appears, is transformative. He has penetrating changeable eyes that go from blue to gray and at times, green, that seems to be settling into green (most often) as he gets older. |
|
Physiology | * Similar to humans though the internal arrangement of organs is different. * The Syndari have a four-lobed brain though, because it is much more compact than the Ferengi, did not result in an enlarged cranium. The structure of their brain renders them difficult to read by most telepathic species; highly-skilled Betazoids may get very brief and confused glimpses -- however, Betazoids will find the experience uncomfortable, often painful, and the Syndari would know. * Retain youthful appearance well into their 200s and only begin to ‘look their age’ in the last 50-60 years of life. |

Personality & Traits
General Overview | Cian is a survivor who carries the scars of his childhood, both the physical ones (a latticework of scars on his back and the tattoo on his left bicep that marks him as an abandoned serf) and the emotional ones. He is intelligent, perceptive. He faces situations/events with a calm demeanor and a sharp mind. He assesses quickly, will ask for advice when needed, and isn't afraid to make the tough calls. While he might hold back if he doesn't know you, he's relatively honest and straightforward. He has a strong and well-developed sense of right and wrong; he's not one to go in guns blazing without first considering all the options. Good sense of humor - and encourages honest discussion and a certain relaxed attitude on the Bridge (within reason of course). |
|
Strengths & Weaknesses | Strengths: + Intelligent, thoughtful - will take the time to consider options, wrestle with larger decisions, but isn't afraid to act when needed + Athletic - loves being on the water + Altruistic - puts the needs of others above his own and works for the common good. Believes in the Prime Directive and will wrestle with morally gray decisions. + Cares about his people and his ship. Both he and (now deceased wife) Leonie thought of the Zheng He as more than a job -- it became their home + Strong work ethic- not afraid to do what's needed even when it's difficult + Curious and inquisitive - Something of an explorer at heart. Really wants to know what's out there + Independent, self-reliant. + He spoke three languages before he was 13 and having done so, he's a bit of a linguist. Picks up languages easily. + Good under pressure. He tends to be the ‘Calm in the Eye of the Storm’. Whatever he's feeling gets dealt with once the crisis has passed and he's alone. + Practically fearless. He doesn't like to feel afraid. Will push against something that scares him until it doesn't anymore. + Outgoing. Gets along well with others and can usually find a way to draw others out, get them talking + He's a survivor Weaknesses: Not exactly cheerful before coffee (seriously, approach with caution) - Tends to be a bit reserved around people he doesn't know well. His habitual expression is on the stern side which sometimes gives people a mistaken impression about him - A total disaster in the kitchen - but then, there are replicators so who cares? - Takes time for him to let you completely in but when he does ... you're all the way in. - Not one for tears. The few times he has, he's done so in private. - Can be a bit stubborn which he likes to think of as 'determined |

Personal History | Cian is pronounced KEY-an 2354: Born on Syndar Prime 2357: Received his first brand 2362: Last of the great ships left Syndar Prime 2364: Buried his parents on the family land 2365: Rescued by a Starfleet medical team and brought to Earth On Syndar Prime, he was known as 874 Cian. 874 was the familial designation given indicating that he was a serf from a family of serfs, government-owned without any chance of freeing himself from that status. He was born to a world in rapid decline, branded at the age of three (and that brand was checked and sometimes updated every passang [year]). Generations upon generations of his family had pooled their resources to buy a small plot of land and built a ramshackle house that was the heart of the family’s pride. He was put to work at the age of four and, like everyone else in his family, the pittance he earned went toward the good of all. In those years, Cian was known as a sunny, easygoing child who laughed often. Exposure to the free (citizens, monks and nobility) taught him the value of caution. And his smile, so often present at four, began to disappear. Word spread that Syndar Prime was dying; excessive abuse of the environment had taken its toll and put the planet into a death-spiral. Cian remembers how the marketplaces emptied, year after year, as the great ships took off never to return. He remembers his last branding at the age of 8, only days before the last ship left the homeworld and over a billion serfs found themselves alone on a world that was already in its death throes. He was 10 when the sickness swept through the area he lived in and took first his mother and then his father. He was 11 when Starfleet showed up. By then, he hadn’t spoken to a soul in over a year. Malnourished and more than a little wild, he was brought to Earth for evaluation and care. Those first weeks, he slept beneath the bed rather than on it and refused to speak to anyone and being Syndari, the Betazoid counselors were unable to reach his mind. Still, the staff persevered; slowly, bit by bit, they convinced him to take small steps and counted each one a victory. He was placed into foster care later the same year with a family in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. His foster-parents are oceanographers who understood his needs. With special attention, he began slowly to come out of his self-imposed isolation. He learned the language though he would always speak it with an accent and began to adapt to the cultural differences. By the time he was fourteen, Cian seemed to have made the adjustment though it wasn’t without difficulties. As a teenager, he questioned everything, tested beliefs before adopting or dismissing them, and in those early years, got into more than one fight with schoolyard bullies. And while he often got hurt, he refused to back down. It was suggested that he take a martial arts class. As someone who found it hard to open up, bottled emotions were exhausted in hard physical workouts. He would often stay after the class ended or come back in his free time and it was in one of those afternoons that he met Isador, a martial arts instructor. Through that training he learned how to focus, how to remain centered and finally, achieved the control he needed. With several strongly positive influences in his life, Cian made the adjustment. His grades improved and he began thinking about what he wanted to do with his life. A lifetime of servitude had led to the death of his parents and he vowed to be no man’s slave though he still believed in serving the greater good. Long talks with his sensei, Izador, and with his foster parents brought him to the decision to at least explore the idea of Starfleet. He investigated, researched, asked questions and finally, once satisfied that they were not similar to the Syndari, he applied for and was accepted into Starfleet Academy. He met the woman who would be his wife when he was 16; they were inseparable. There were long earnest talks and more than a little negotiation. When he entered the Academy, he took her last name as his surname and gave her a promise ring. They were married the summer she got her M.D. and once she completed her residency, she began traveling with him, serving as a civilian physician. Cian was already captain of the USS Crazy Horse when Leonie was killed. Her death lead him to reflect on his life with her and to understand, eventually, that theirs had not been a marriage of passion but of enduring friendship. This has also led him to introspection with respect to what a relationship of passion would mean for him ... and with whom. |

Service Record | 2372: Took D’Anvers as his last name. Enrolled in Starfleet Academy 2372--2376 At Starfleet Academy, Cian studied administration and deployment of starfleet vessels, bases and outposts, navigation of starships at sublight and warp speeds, astrophysics, diplomacy with attention to hostile species, engineering - specifically, operations and command functions, life support, deflectors, weapons and security systems, and base-mode operations. He learned Vulcan as well as combat tactics - small, unit, phasers, photon torpedoes, as well as starship combat. He studied the strategy of battle and leadership tactics. He also studied piloting of minor and major ships and combat tactics for shuttles and runabouts. The Academy was something of a revelation to Cian. The Federation did not believe in government-sanctioned slavery. It was as much an abomination to them as it had been to his foster-parents and Sensei. Between studying and classes and long conversations with Leonie, those years passed quickly. He participated in a study group and they became friends. They spent time studying, debating philosophy, and hungered for news about the Dominion War. 2376: Graduated - Communications/Operations 2376: Married Leonie D’Anvers 2376: Assigned to the USS Zheng He, Operations officer 2378: Promoted to Chief Operations Officer and 2XO, USS Gagarin 2380: Promoted to Executive Officer, USS Gagarin 2385: Promoted to Commanding Officer, USS Zheng He 2393: USS Zheng He sent for long overdue retrofit; crew reassigned 2394: Assigned as Commanding Officer, USS Crazy Horse |
