Personality & Traits
Strengths & Weaknesses | Strengths: ======= + Extreme Runner + Remembers everything he sees and hears; however, he can be ordered to 'forget' and he will. Those orders can only come after a short ceremony is performed between Niun and the one whose orders he'd accept. + Extremely good in hand-to-hand combat and with knifes, swords, and quarterstaff. Competent with a phaser but believes, as do all Kel, that it is a coward's weapon + Senses are more acute than a human and has significantly faster reflexes + Learns quickly Weaknesses: ========= - Polyamorous - The Mri do not believe in marriage or even monogamous relationships. - Has almost no interest in personal possessions. - Highly resistant to invasive medical procedures. To be kept alive by a machine is a sort of living death which is anathema to all Mri. - Will not accept an order than he considers to be dishonorable. - Considers energy weapons to be a coward's choice - Expects, as do all Kel, to die young and treats every day as his last - Will not teach his own language to anyone not-Mri - Dresses exclusively in black when not on duty (and hates that he has to have color in his uniform) |
|
Ambitions | He has none. | |
Languages Spoken | High and Low Speech of the Mri, Federation Standard, Ferengi, Klingon, Orion. Tends to pick up languages easily and as needed. | |
Hobbies & Interests | + Spending time with friends + Voracious reader -- mostly within his field -- something that was forbidden on his home world + Extreme running/camping + Sho'nai (knife game) + Exploring/hiking + Live theater, music, holoadventures - especially having to do with other cultures + History and philosophy ... there's more but best to figure that out as you go, eh? |
Personal History | Dark: Period of time in which the Mri traveled to a new world and a new contract. During this time all memory of what happened before was erased from the Kel and Kath. Between: Period of time when the Mri worked to satisfy a contract The Mri ======= The Mri originated on the world of Kulath, an ancient world which they shared with four other races. As resources grew scarce, some of the Mri left Kutath in what were called 'slow ships' seeking other worlds. They would hire on as mercenaries with a race, but each time the relationship ended badly, the Mri left to seek a new start. During each journey, or Dark Age, everything but the ancient traditions of the mri were forgotten by kel and kath, with only the sen retaining records of the Between they had left between. A hint of this process remained in the Shon’jir or passing song which was sung at births and deaths, but most kel of the Between thought of it only as referring to the individual. After more than eighty such migrations, the Mri settled permanently on Kesrith, a desert planet not dissimilar to their lost home. There they encountered the Dusei, dog-like telepaths who had intelligence but not the capacity for speech. The dusei established bonds with warriors of the kel and kath, but were said to find the minds of sen too cold for their tastes. The Mri are divided into three castes: - Kel: Warriors who dress in black. Because they interact with outsiders, they veil their faces to preserve the privacy of the People. Furthermore, they are forbidden to read or write, lest they inadvertently betray the ancient secrets of the People. They are masters of both the traditional edged weapons of the People and the modern weapons they use as mercenaries. They play shon’ai, the traditional passing game of the People, with knives. - Sen: Scholars, and dress in gold, except for the she’pan or matriarch of the tribe, who dresses in white. They keep the sacred writings of their people, and are celibate. Because they do not interact with outsiders, they do not veil their faces. They play shon’ai with wands. The she'pan, leader and spiritual mother to the tribe, is usually Sen. - Kath: Children and those women that do not join either the Kel or Sen and dress in blue. No man past puberty may remain in kath, and those unsuited for kel or sen die. The kath are the lowest caste of the mri, responsible for the upkeep of the tribe's dwellings. Kath play shon’ai with a pair of rounded stones. Personal History ============ Niun was born on Kesrith and grew up as in training to become a member of the Kel. Over an extended period of time, the Sen organized a coup. When it was done, the Kel were ordered to put down their arms and leave Kesrith, never to return. Although ten years old at the time, Niun was already a warrior. He, along with all members of his caste, walked to the spaceport, with his Dusei at his side, and got on the first transport. As luck would have it, the transport dropped them off on Risa. The elder members of the caste set up a camp in a wilderness area and began the slow and difficult process of mourning the loss of their home world and thousands of years of tradition. Training continued for the young warriors, Niun among them. By the time he was sixteen, he had completed his trials and become Kel. Those trials included: - Complete a vigil where they did not sleep for 48 hours, standing watch over the mysteries - Live for two weeks in the wilderness through their own skill and toughness, without tools or supplies, just their clothes and a hunting knife. - Run 50-75 miles/day for five days Moving on was not easy. Many of the elder members of the caste chose ritual suicide rather than live as outcasts and Niun, growing up in the camp that had been intended as temporary but had somehow become permanent, wanted something more. He wanted to learn, to understand how such a thing could happen to his people, and more than that, wanted to prevent that from happening to someone else. |
