Hael Edevane Reports In

Posted on 12/09/2020 @ 3:43pm by Captain Cian D'Anvers & Lieutenant Hael Edevane

Mission: S3E1: Time of Change
Location: Captain's Ready Room, USS Sitting Bull
Timeline: Day 94 at 0730

Departure was generally a busy time on a starship but when the ship was only the third of her class and just recently liberated from the clutches of an over-protective design team, busy took on a whole new meaning. Then too, there was the added business of adapting to a whole new way of doing things. The Sitting Bull was a Pathfinder vessel and as of yesterday, his responsibility. That, of course, ended any hope of extended shore leave since there was literally just too much to do. Still, he could take the Serenity out overnight. Maybe spend some time by himself on the water and wade through some of his daunting reading-list in between diving the reef.

Possible.

Maybe.

He had just ordered a cup of coffee from the replicator, now emblazoned with the logo of the Sitting Bull on its side, when a chime indicated someone was requesting entrance. Surprised, he wondered who could have found him on a ship that didn't even have its crew aboard yet, and called out "Enter" as he walked through the sitting area, down the step, and around the corner of his desk.

Hael Edevane had never been Starfleet. It showed in the way he entered a room. Security, because his sharp gaze sought out every corner of the room immediately upon entering, but relaxed. His bearing was more relaxed and confident than Cian had come to expect of Starfleet officers. He smiled readily enough as he came forward. "I'm Lieutenant Edevane, Captain," he said at once. His voice was a warm tenor that could, if necessary, carry easily across a noisy room. "I'm to join your Security staff."

'Welcome," Cian said as he gestured toward the chairs facing his desk. "Please have a seat. Can I get you something to drink?"

"Black coffee would be great," Hael said. "Woke up just in time to depart the transport." He grinned cheerfully as he added, "Think I left half my brain back there, probably still complaining about doing anything before coffee."

Cian chuckled as he made the trip back to the replicator and ordered his favorite blend without adornment. "A man after my own heart," Cian said and found himself smiling as he made the trip back to his desk where he set the mug down before the newest member of his security staff. "I have long believed that nothing comes before coffee." He walked around the edge of his desk and sat in his own seat, one hand automatically reaching for his mug. "Course, not everyone I served under was of the same opinion."

Hael nodded as he reached for his mug and took an appreciative sip. "First time I took my security team out of overnight training, I brought along travel mugs with coffee for everyone. Great icebreaker." He took another sip and nodded, gesturing toward the mug. "Now that is some excellent coffee, Captain."

"Thank you. It's a personal favorite." Cian took a sip of coffee while his agile mind summoned the details in Edevane's file. He remembered at the time feeling a sense of kinship with someone who had also experienced that whole 'fish out of water' thing as a child on Earth. More importantly, he recalled the performance reviews submitted by his former ship's command staff. "We're still staffing the ship and Security is one where we don't have the leadership positions filled as yet. That means you'll be functioning as Chief of Security for the moment. Once we finish with Personnel, decisions will be made regarding who takes Chief and who takes the two Assistant Chief positions."

"Works for me," Hael said. And in truth it did. He knew the work and he'd already served as Assistant Chief on the Dayan. He wasn't particularly ambitious and he'd seen how the higher you rose, the less time you actually spent in the field. Hael being the hands-on type, preferred leading away team security to sitting on the Bridge watching someone else do it. "Any idea how long before we get underway?"

"It's probably going to be a week or two," Cian said. "Some of the crew are tied up giving evidence in court-martial proceedings." He didn't elaborate but then, he doubted he needed to either. The murder of an unconscious guard was a topic of heated conversation both within Starfleet and without. "And as I said, the crew are still reporting aboard."

Hael nodded between sips of coffee. "That's good. Gives me time to check out the security team and make sure everyone has their certifications up-to-date." He shrugged slightly and took another sip. "The usual, you know?"

"I do at that," Cian said. One corner of his mouth quirked upward, memory upon memory. "As we're still in orbit around Earth, the majority of the crew is on shore leave. That goes for you as well. As long as we're ready to depart, feel free to take advantage of our time here. Once we leave, we'll be on our own for a bit."

"Thank you, Captain," Hale said. "It's been a long while since I've been on Earth."

"Then, I'll leave you to your shore leave," Cian said. "You're fully certified by the EC so there's no need for extra testing. All that's left to say, I guess, is welcome aboard the Sitting Bull."

"Glad to be here," Hael said, as smiling, he finished off his coffee and rose in a fluid motion that spoke volumes. Trim and well-muscled, he moved with the easy grace of a long-time athlete. He carried his mug back to the reclamation chute, something most forgot to do. Privately, he'd never been of the opinion that work should be left to the Captain to do when he could easily take care of it himself. With a final nod, he exited the Captain's Ready Room.

Cian watched him go and found himself smiling again. He'd been doing that more and more lately as though a shell had cracked and let something of himself peep through. The trauma of his youth had led him to decisions that his adult self couldn't live with long-term. Realizing that had been the beginning. Making the first steps had been hard but even if they turned out to be mistaken, he didn't regret them. He had the feeling that he was moving in the right direction at last.

His smile wavered as he caught sight of the work ahead of him but held.
