Mission:
S2E2: The Auction House
Location: USS Crazy Horse, Brig
Timeline: Day 53 at 1315
Tahlin entered the brig and nodded to Ensign Mendyar. "I'm here to see the prisoner, Ensign."
"Last cell, Ma'm."
"Thank you..." She gingerly walked down the corridor. "How are you doing, Ensign?"
"About as well as can be expected." His fishy face took on his equivalent of a scowl. "She'll be facing court martial when we get back to Earth, that's a certainty. In the meantime, I have to guard her."
At the far end of the brig Larissa heard the steps of someone coming down the corridor and sat up from where she lay on the bed, given she was the only person in the brig it was a safe guess they were heading to see her.
"On your feet, Lieutenant!" Tahlin was not in a particularly amicable mood--or at least, that's what she wanted to project to Larissa. "Face me, please."
"Good afternoon to you to Lieutenant Tahlin." Larissa said but stood up anyway.
"Don't get familiar with me... Or did you forget that Bajoran names are reversed? Did that part of your brain decide to go to Risa the same time you shot that Orion?"
"I apologise Lieutenant Lae'Or," Larissa replied. "Slipped my mind for a moment."
"Slipped your mind..." The Security chief put her hands on her hips and glared at the woman in the cell. "You shot an unarmed, defenseless Orion--one of your own species. He could have had valuable intelligence. Did you not remember that Starfleet doesn't fire first? We're committed to peace, not war... What possessed you, Lieutenant... Answer me now!"
"I was angry and let it get the better of me." Larissa replied, slowly she paced the small interior of the cell. "They killed a perfectly healthy man under my command for no reason and kept countless people in horrible conditions."
"That's no excuse... We were not under fire--I, of course, didn't see it, but I've heard... No excuse, Lieutenant..." She let her expression soften--slightly. "I don't like seeing you behind that forcefield--you're a good officer. You had a chance to be a great leader, and now... Now it's up to the courts to decide your fate."
"You think I want to be in here either." Larissa told the Bajoran. "You think I want an instantly regretted moment of rage to ruin everything I've done since I was a teenager."
"Of course not... But the courts don't, and won't, see it that way... I want to make sure you tell them the truth, as that is the first duty of any Starfleet officer... But why, why did you shoot him, apart from anger?"
"That was it." Larissa responded. "I was furious, so clouded with rage that I couldn't control."
"Have you had problems with anger before, Lieutenant?"
She shook her head. "Never, don't get me wrong I've been angry with things and people before but never enough to lash out like that."
Tahlin sighed, sagging a bit. "I don't know you well, but maybe, just maybe, there's a chance... I know you're a good officer, Lieutenant, and you can prove that by telling the truth... If there's compassion in the galaxy, you'll need it."
"A lot of people aren't compassionate when it comes to Orions, most people think we're all syndicate members, no amount of federation 'enlightenment' can get through that bias."
"Not me, Lieutenant, not me... I've known some lovely Orions in my time... I'll advocate for you, if I can, though I'm still not happy... What you did... It's not Starfleet."
"I know, but what's done is done." She told her. "No starfleet regulation is going to bring him back, no starfleet regulation is going to get me out of paying for what I did."
"Indeed... What's done, is done... If they send you to prison, or if they just cashier you out of the service, I'll be sure to write you... As you were, Lieutenant..." The Bajoran gave her a salute, as though to wish her luck and say thanks, then turned on her heel and left.
"Lieutenant," Larissa said as Tahlin turned to leave, "Will you remind medical that I'm due for my pheremone shot in a couple of days?"
"Of course... What shot, though? If its not too personal?"
"Us Orion women when we're in fleet service need to take blocker shots to stop our pheromone effects on people." Larissa replied "They don't want all the men onboard being infatuated with us all the time."
"And some women, too, I'd think..." Tahlin turned her head to regard the other woman. "I'll see it done."
