Departmental Assessment

Posted on 06/15/2020 @ 11:18am by Lieutenant JG Rafael de Vega & Lieutenant JG S'Lace & Lieutenant JG Jasmine Langtree & Lieutenant JG Remigius ("Remy") Fawkes Ph.D.

Mission: S1E3: Visit to Starbase 375
Location: USS Crazy Horse | Deck 01 | Briefing Room
Timeline: Day 2 at 0900

Lieutenant Joral had summoned the various Department Heads to the USS Crazy Horse's Briefing Room shortly after settling in aboard the starship. He did not want to interrupt their standing 'R&R' orders by the Captain, but did need to know how each of the departments stood as well as giving them an opportunity to interact with him. When they arrived as the space station, they had Lieutenant Commander Alvar Othran overseeing them. Now, when they returned to duty it would be J.J.

He tried to adjust the room's lighting to 'set the mood,' and make the setting feel a bit more welcoming and relaxed. Several glasses were placed in the center of the table with a carafe of Arcturian fizz. J.J. had made sure to send out the request as casual and uniform optional. He awaited the various Department Heads.

S'Lace regarded the 'play tower' that stood in the corner of the room, completely ignored by her charge.

However her charge seemed utterly fascinated with the small crate the 'play tower' had been packed in; Dalgleish had settled in it quite contentedly and seemed asleep.

It was then that S'Lace realized that cats were completely devoid of logic and any attempt to understand them. She made to depart for the meeting with the ship's new executive officer. The doors opened and Dalgleish, proving his slumber to be a clever ruse, made a dash for the exist. S'Lace snatched him easily and gently tossed home towards the bed. The doors closed before he had a chance to orient himself.

Lt jg.Jasmine Langtree entered the briefing room at the assigned time, got some coffee and took a seat. She had just found the XO of all people had been replaced.

"Hi there, My name is Jasmine Langtree, I'm the Chief Science Officer, and you are?" Jasmine inquired.

Wearing a long tunic, dusted with sparkle along the shoulders, over a pair of pants, Remigius entered the Briefing Room, bringing with him a delicate waft of scent, subtle and decidedly unique. He smiled warmly as he entered, whisper quiet in soft-soled shoes that precisely matched his midnight blue outfit, and poured himself a glass; the heavy ring on his index finger sounded as he picked up the glass and took an appreciative sip before finding a seat. He nodded politely to the others present and settled back, glass raised to his lips.

J.J. greeted both of the individuals who arrived with a pleasant smile. His youthfulness and relatively low rank had likely thrown them. "Pleasure to meet you, Jasmine and you as well" he said to the stealthy quiet type. "I'm Lieutenant Joral, First Officer. I am sorry, but Lieutenant Commander Othran was reassigned if you weren't made aware of that yet."

"A pleasure to meet you, I'm Remigius Fawkes." He spoke in a voice that could best be described as throaty, a sort of husky purr, and grinned as he tapped one painted nail against the side of his glass. "I'm in much the same situation. If you expected Lieutenant Toran, he was also reassigned. I'm the new Counselor. I left the Chairman to cavort among the unopened boxes while I came to this meeting."

"Pleasure to have to aboard" replied the Trill lieutenant.

Rafael stepped into the briefing room and noted the faces already present in the room. He tucked the PADD with recent intelligence reports into his arm. He nodded to each to acknowledging their presence, he had yet to meet most of the staff and would likely have a chance at this informal gathering. Rafael had taken not of the casual attire and decided comfortable simplicity would share a little about his own personality. He wore a simple black cotton short sleeve shirt and grey slacks, the typical attire when off duty.

Rafael made a straight path for the new executive officer, "Rafael de Vega, Chief Intelligence Officer. It's a pleasure to meet you Sir." He extended his had for a firm handshake.

J.J. took the man's hand and gave it a good proper shake, looking the Intelligence officer in the eyes. "I look forward to working wit you" replied Lieutenant Joral.

Just then, a man wearing a gold uniform walked in. He was wearing restraints and smelled like he attended a REALLY good party the night before. behind him was another man wearing a gold uniform. the first man turned to the second. And the second man removed the first man's restraints. "Thanks baby, your the best." He said smiling as he dismissed the security officer. At that point the security man left. Upon a second look, it could be seen that a nice shiner was starting to set in around the man's eye. The man took a seat. Then smiled. "Howdy" was all he said to the group.

"Howdy," replied the Trill. "You might want to have that looked at if you haven't already" he added, but the next entrant had great timing.

S'Lace entered the conference room and regarded those who were present. She had opted to wear her uniform as well as a medical smock over it. She took note of the man "sporting a black eye" and without a word removed the tricorder from her pocked and ran the stylus over the side of his head.

"You will live," she stated as she noted the readings. Her nostrils flared at the scent surrounding him, "Although my prescription is a shower and fresh uniform."

She gave lieutenant Langtree a polite nod, then eyed the other two: human, Trill. "Lieutenant S'Lace, Chief Medical Officer," she nodded towards the prisoner, "And this is...?"

The man formerly wearing restraints looked at the person from whom he was just examined. "Thanks. I can tell by your prognosis that your education was not wasted." He said sarcastically joking. "And I would be your new Chief Engineering Officer. Name is Cash. Xander Cash. But, we really don't know what's happening after this." He said with a smile.

"Chief Engineer?" S'Lace echoed as she turned around to regard the man. Then the name registered, "Is your Father John Cash?"

"Yup. That's Daddy." Said Cash. "I know what your thinking. Admiral was NOT the word you were thinking of to close the sentence, son of a, when your talking about me. Am I right?" He said laughing.

Fawkes smiled. He had lost his family and his world to the Borg a long while ago but he could relate to the notion of expectations and not meeting them. "Parents in power often make the mistake of trying to manage their children in much the same way that they do those under their professional authority. I'm Fawkes and that's just a roundabout way of saying, its always better to be your authentic self."

"Quite... I know how you feel." Tahlin had entered in casual clothes, hair pulled back, Bajoran earring prominently displayed, and a curious pendant with a burnished disk showing the image of a hazelnut around her neck. She headed for the new XO. "Lieutenant Tahlin, Chief of Security. Was dealing with paperwork related to..." She broke off and gave Cash a bit of a dark look.

J.J. noticed the look. He surmised the paperwork and Cash were related. "Welcome."

The Trill poured himself a glass and took a drink. "I see the Captain was not pulling my leg when he said we had an interesting bunch" J.J. noted. "For those of you just coming in, I'm Lieutenant Joral, your new Executive Officer. You may address me as such, but I'll respond to 'ELL-TEE and X" during pressure situations on the bridge."

S'Lace turned back the new executive officer. Joral?

Fawkes settled back in his seat, taking the occasional sip of Arcturian Fizz. He'd much rather have had a good glass of wine but with Starfleet events, you took what you could get. He was an author and a psychologist; both halves enjoyed parties and gatherings.

"Alright, let's get things underway" said the Executive Officer pleasantly. He looked around the room and picked a 'target' to address. "Cash, Chief Engineer. What do you have to report about your department...status, personnel problems, lack of supplies?"

Cash began to laugh. "Well for starters, SIR, I haven't been to my duty station yet. Hell, I don't even have quarters yet. The closest thing that my team, OR myself has seen resembling quarters is the inside of a brig cell. So, as you can see SIR, I'm not exactly at my best, OR prepared to give you a report on the condition that this ship's condition is in.....SIR." Then, he poured himself a glass of cold water. Took a sip, then held the glass on his swelling eye. "That's all I got...SIR" Cash concluded.

Rafeal was seated beside the man named Fawkes. He had been relaxed and put at ease by the comfort of the briefing room chair, casually switching attention between the executive officer's directed speech and the PADD which contained little more information than anyone in the room already knew about the region they were about to explore. His attention was roused by the impertinent tone the Chief of engineering had taken with his superior officer. 'That's the risk you take calling a 'casual' briefing during Liberty,' he stated internally, eyes darting towards the Chief and XO.

S'Lace took a seat and regarded the new Chief Engineer, "You seem to be in some distress, lieutenant. Would you like something to relieve the discomfort your eye is currently giving you?"

Cash looked at the person talking to him in the medical smock. He smiled. "I take it you must be the Chief Medical Officer?" He asked. "Well, as you last pointed out, I will live. Thank you Dr. I will accept your gracious offer of treatment. But, I will tell you, I've had MUCH worse then this in the past." He said almost laughing.

"I am the Chief Medical Officer," S'Lace replied, "And I did not offer medical assistance; I was simply curious to know whether or not you would like some. And judging by your behavior I do not doubt you have incurred worse."

She turned to the new XO, "My name is S'Lace. Have we met before? Your symbiote name is familiar to me."

"I get the feeling my symbiont does" replied J.J. He had felt the sense of nostalgia from seeing the Doctor. "I'm only the second host for my symbiont. I'm still getting used to feelings and perceptions."

Tahlin watched the interplay with interest, particularly noting the Intelligence chief's look of... Annoyance?

"Security and Intelligence, how are your departments running? I do not know how often my predecessor checked on matters, but I would like to keep in close contact with both of you."

"Well... Security is running smoothly... I did have to discipline a couple of my people, both for an incident on our last mission, and a... matter involving ships company... I'd like to speak about that if I could to you, Sir, after this meeting has concluded, if you don't mind?"

Rafael paused to ensure that the security chief had finished his report before interjecting with his own updates. He picked up the padd before him flipping between highlighted sections of importance. "We have little formal intelligence on the region. What little specifics we do have are still being vetted. It is clear that we will be doing the intelligence gathering while in the system." He set the padd down and returned control to the XO with a nod.

J.J. gave a nod in response. "I'll hang back a bit with you to discuss security after the meeting" he replied to the Security Chief.

The Trill shifted his focus onto the teal uniforms. "Science and Medical, you're up, ladies" he said with a polite smile. "Anything of note going on with either of your departments?"

"I assume the position of Chief Medical Officer recently," S'Lace replied after a moment, "after my predecessor assumed duties elsewhere. And another of our doctors has been reassigned, meaning we are not operating at optimal efficiency. Whatever medical personnel that can be found would be appreciated."

Tahlin nodded, concerned at the lack of staffing. "Sir, I could ask any of my people with medical training to help out in a pinch. I know of at least one Deltan in my department who could work as a medical corpsman if Starfleet had such."

"Doctor, I'll make a note to bring your personnel needs to the Captain's attention. The last thing we need is an over worked and understaffed Medical Department" replied J.J.

He shot an appreciative look at the Security Chief. "I would imagine most of your security personnel have at least some basic emergency medic training. In a pinch, that may have to do" the XO noted. "Lieutenant Langtree?" J.J. transitioned as he directly addressed the Chief Science Officer.

"That would be me Sir. We are currently in the process of fine tuning Astrometrics for mapping the rift to build accurate star charts to enable the Crazy Horse and future starships, traders and other civilians to safely navigate the rift. We just completed a tech refresh of the entire ODN computer network, Sir." Jasmine said.

"Excellent," replied J.J. as he locked his sights onto one last individual. "Doctor Fawkes, if I may...how are you settling in aboard? I anticipate we will be working closely together."

"Nothing broke in shipment," Fawkes said, his voice rich with warmth and laughter, "and I think I beat my personal best as far as speed of unpacking." His expression sobered as he continued. "Lieutenant Toran didn't prepare anyone for his departure so I've been spending time making my presence known. So far," he said, gesturing with a spread of his hands to the sides, "everything is going well. As for working closely, I'm at your service."

"I might want to avail myself of your services, Counselor," Tahlin told him, a little cryptically.

"Any time," Fawkes said, directly a warm smile toward the Chief of Security. "And that goes for everyone. I have enormous tea collection, feel free to stop by for a cup and a chat."

J.J. nodded. "Thank you all for coming together here on such short notice. I will be available afterward to discuss anything that was not brought up earlier. You're all dismissed to go about your days and resume normal activities, or abnormal activities if you're into taxidermy."

Tahlin rose, giving the XO a raised eyebrow at his turn of phrase, but not commenting on it.
