| Personal History | Rafael was born in the year 2363 in a small village county in Huesca, Spain. The Fanlo family retained ancient prominence in the local Earth area for preserving the tiny pueblo named in their honor. The family villa was part of a collection of historical sites intended to preserve the ancient past. Tomas, his father, worked for the United Federation of Planet’s diplomatic corps and his mother, Isabella, a distinguished historian and archeologist working for the Federation Archeological Committee, surrounded Rafael with artifacts and history of the past. Politics, intrigue, and heritage were common dinner conversations. Rafael and his siblings were afforded a rich and expansive education while travelling the stars. The children were able to visit a vast number of planets and systems through distance education. Mobility distanced Rafael from forming deep long lasting relationships, but afforded the Fanlo children the benefit of a strong bond and connection. Rafael displayed an interest in history and political science. Introductions to many peoples, cultures, and traditions around the galaxy fueled Rafael’s desire for adventure and new experiences. He quickly discovered that athleticism was a universal topic of interest and that sports were an easy way to build relationships and comradery, especially when new starts were a common occurrence. As adolescent maturity began to set in, Rafael grew in awareness of the intricate details of his father’s work. He paid more attention to the news feeds, especially reports from his mother’s sister, a reporter with the Federation News Network. He followed the diplomatic finesse of Captain Picard, the tumultuous tension of the Cardassian Occupation and Dominion War, and the return of Voyager from the Delta Quadrant. Rafael was specifically captivated by the Romulans, a people shrouded in mystery and political instability. Time in the holodeck, with other boys, fueled a love for weapons and military strategies. Rafael, in his spare time, would create historical battles and landscapes from across the galaxy and timeline. He quickly became an amateur tactician, paying special attention to the historical, cultural, and political details he could find in the history books. Females also entered the field of interest. He was specifically attracted to a blond female in his class, the daughter of his teacher at the time. The two connected over the love of history and began the foundation of a long-term friendship. Against his father’s wishes, Rafael applied to Starfleet Academy after completion of secondary education. Specific results on the required aptitude battery highlighted specific strengths in word knowledge, arithmetic reasoning, comprehension, and computer systems technical skills. Expecting to declare a major in the tactical security field, Rafale received a conditional acceptance into the Intelligence Division, per recommendation of his father. In a heated exchange with his father shared, “I may not agree with your decisions, but I know you my son. You are not some grunt destined to die protecting your captain.” He was even surprised to find support from his girlfriend who supported his father’s words, “trust your father, sometimes our parents know us better than we do and see a brighter future from their own mistakes.” Rafael took the conditional acceptance. Completion of the first semester only confirmed his father’s assessment. Rafael was pleased at the overlap of skills and knowledge base the intelligence division required. He sat next to engineers, medical students, and diplomats, learning a breadth of information that he would later have to track, analyze, and interpret. He was the modern spymaster, weaving a web of intrigue. The best part was he even got to play with the most up to date weapons and gadgets Starfleet had to offer. The final year at the academy was wrought with catastrophe and political strife. The synthetic’s attack on Mars Colony and Utopia Planitia not only sparked fear in the people of Earth, but greatly impacted the humanitarian aid to the Romulans. The resignation of Admiral Picard and the threat of 14 member planets to pull out of the Federation raised tensions across the galaxy. |
