Doctors Without Borders

Mission:
S1E3: Visit to Starbase 375
Location: Private Quarters
Timeline: Day 2 at 0600
Their quarters felt more like home these days, because Leonie insisted on such things, though at the moment, the warmth and wonder was fading with every piece of clothing tucked into her suitcase.
"I'm a civilian doctor, Key," Leonie said. "And this ... well, its important work. Can you imagine?" As she spoke, she sorted through her clothes, choosing the ones that were warmest and most practical and then winnowing that down to the smallest number possible. "We're all civilians and we can go where Starfleet can't. We don't ally with any one group."
Doctors Without Borders. Folded long ago as Earth evolved and it was no longer needed. A worthwhile humanitarian effort that he supported from a philosophical point of view except now, his wife would be on the front lines. Thoughts stirred within his mind and he locked them away; this was not the time for that.
Leonie rolled up under garments and socks, fitting them in with the precision of a master mason, as she fixed her gaze on her husband. "It's only go to be for three months, Key. You know its something I need to do."
"I do," Cian said. "I have not forgotten our vows."
Leonie smiled, the depths of her eyes filling with love and memory, as she made a last check of her suitcase. "And I have kept up my end. Now its your turn."
Cian rose from his seat and crossed the room to enfold her in his arms. "Yes, you have. More than I could ever have hoped. Forgive me, its not easy to be one the one who waits."
Leonie kissed him, grinning against his lips. "Welcome to my world."
Cian kissed her back, grumbling, "I don't like your world." He pulled her in tight, nuzzling the side of her neck. "Mine's much better, don't you think?"
Laughing, she pushed him away. "Nice try, Key. But I have got to get going." She closed her case and he picked it up while she shouldered a backpack that had seen better days a long while back. "Needed to be on the ship an hour ago."
Cian nodded. "Understood." There was more he could say but didn't. Partings were hard enough without adding in the messier parts. She knew he'd worry just as she'd worried every time he'd left her waiting. She'd never stopped him and he wouldn't stop her ... however much he might want to do so.
He walked her down to the transporter room and set her bag on the pad beside her. "Safe journey," he said and grinned as, while the beam stole her from him, she blew him a kiss.
