Mission: S1E1: Out of the Barn
Location: USS Crazy Horse, Armory/Phaser Range
Timeline: Day 3 at 0900

Neteri walked into the firing range and looked for her Chief. Finding her, "Ens. Neteri Blackfeather ACsO reporting for qualification trials. Trained on all 3 type hand phasers," she said.

"Good... We'll test you on Type III, if you don't mind. I expect you to train on all, but for testing purposes, Type III... Did you just transfer from somewhere? You'll forgive me--I haven't had a chance to run through all the crew in my department yet."

"Yes Lt. Tahlin, I transferred in a few days ago. I am trained on all types of phasers and phase rifles and other ancient weapons as well," Neteri said chuckling. "Shall we have a go at it? Which would prefer I do the disks or targets?", she asked.

"Discs... Standard for all qualifications... Aim for the blue, if you don't mind."

Tahlin hit a control. "Go!"

"Sure sir. On your mark," Neteri said raising her arm, ready to fire.

Neteri moved fluidly and smoothly as each blue disc moved across the target area. First hitting one then the other, until the exercise was over. She knew she had an almost if not a perfect sequence of hits as she waited for the next round.

"Nineteen... Wonderful... I actually have some orders for you. Make arrangements to work with the Chief Engineer on his accuracy, and I'd like to set up a time to work with you on Type III drills next week."

"Understood Ma'am", Neteri said smiling as she was happy with herself as well.

Two minutes before 0900 hours, the day after he arrived aboard the Crazy Horse, Counselor Toran stepped into the armoury. He hoped never to need to wield a weapon in his job, but also knew it was an unlikely outcome.

He had studied the senior officers’ files before meeting with any of them, so he knew at least a little of what to expect from the security chief. Bajoran, like him, but a bit younger. Joined Starfleet not long after he had. He looked around for her in the armoury, before calling out. “Lieutenant Lae’Or?”

Tahlin smiled at the familiar accent. "What child of the Prophets calls me?" she asked, adopting a mock formal tone her father had sometimes used. At least the bastard was good for something.

Ilos grinned, understanding she was being cheeky. He straightened his posture, fixed a stoic expression, and regarded the taller woman. “Thank you for seeing me, Sister. I come to verify that my faith guides my phaser to its final destination.”

She laughed in return, breaking out into a smile. "If you're going on faith, we've got issues... Lieutenant Lae'or... Yes, that Lae'Or... I'm not my father in any way..." She held out a raised hand in greeting. "You are?"

"Lieutenant junior grade Toran Ilos," he replied, returning her gesture. He took note of the way she spoke about her father. He was familiar with the Vedek, and while it spoke well to her character that she was disassociating from him like this, it was still a data point of the forces that shaped her into who she is now. One that might be useful if she needed to talk to him later. "Chief Counselor. I am actually a decent shot; I spent the last few years on New Bajor and the wilds aren't exactly tame yet. My sister insisted I keep my phaser skills up."

"Hunting voles through the kava fields, huh? ... Lets see how you've done... You know the drill, yes?"

“Yes.”

"Good..." Tahlin selected a Type II phaser and handed it to him. "When you're ready, aim for the blue... Go!"

Pointing the phaser down-range, he took a moment to examine it closely. He’d used them enough times, but it never hurt to check it over, and he learned in two different Academies to always verify your weapon’s settings. Satisfied, he held it steadily and waited for blue discs to appear.

The red beam lanced from his weapon and into its target, again and again. He held back from firing at red or yellow discs as they appeared. A few misses, but no innocent civilians or friendly fire (how he had been taught to interpret the other colours.)

“So how did I do?”

"Seventeen... I guess you have been practicing... You've got nothing to fear here, but I'm offering an invite to all senior staff to join in phaser drills, if you're interested."

“Of course,” he answered. “Never hurts to keep the skill up.” He powered down the phaser, verified it was secure, and handed it back to Tahlin. “Also, if you have a bit of time after we launch, I’d like to talk a bit more. It’s always good to make a friend from the homeworld. Lunch sometime?”

"I'd like that... I even might be able to whip up something special--not exactly like food from home, but close enough."

“Sounds like fun,” Ilos said, smiling and looking forward to sharing a meal with a new friend. “See you soon, Lieutenant.” He left the Armoury, glad that he’d passed certifications and that he’d met someone new.

Looking at his PADD, Romal noticed next on his list of orders was phaser certification. "Well Mizi, just one more stop to make and we can check on our quarters." Romal announced to his little daughter.

Mizi looked up at her adopted father. "I'm getting hungry, daddy."

"This shouldn't take too long, maybe only a few minutes. Find me a turbo lift, would you, Mizi?" Romal asked, knowing full well where to find one.

The little girl smiled and bounded down the corridor, darting this way and that, until she finally found a lift. "Here's one daddy!" she gleefully announced, pointing to it.

"Thanks Mizi! I knew you could find me one."

As they both stepped into the lift, Romal spoke to it; "Armory, please."

The turbo lift began moving and a moment later, it stopped and the door slid open. They walked down the corridor until they reached their destination, the armory. Romal walked in first, with Mizi close behind. There stood a woman, just as tall as Romal, with light brown hair.

Romal walked up to her as she was examining some weapons. "Lieutenant Tahlin." he said, noticing her pips, "I'm Ensign Romal Seshel, here are my orders." he then handed her his PADD.

"I've had some experience both as a citizen and with Star Fleet. I use the type 2 phaser." Romal informed her quickly, then rembered his daughter standing right behind him. "This little girl is Mizi. Would it be all right if she waited in the observation booth, while I do this certification?"

"My daddy is a really good shooter!" Mizi boasted, then hid behind his legs again.

Tahlin addressed the little girl. "Of course you can watch... Why don't you go over with that nice man,"--she gestured to a Benzite Ensign. "Your daddy will be done soon... Ensign Mendyar, look after this one, will you?"

"Will do, Chief!" called back the affable fellow.

"The man will be nice to you, Mizi and you can watch from the barrier, over there." Romal said, pointing to the glass booth as he took a type 2 phaser from the table and turned off the safety

Tahlin turned back to the other Ensign. "Its good to meet you." She held out a hand in greeting. "I'm curious, you look human, but your name definitely isn't...?"

Romal gave Tahlin a friendly handshake, "You're right, the name isn't human in origin. I'm an El-Aurian, but my daughter, Mizi, is most definitely human. A long story, perhaps I might share it with you some day. Shall we begin the phaser test? What are the rules?"

"You have to hit as many targets as you can out of twenty... Just aim for the blue ones... Relax, get a phaser, and go when you're ready."

"All right, then." Romal said, lowering his rate of breathing and separated his feet a comfortable length, he firmly gripped the phaser. He then looked at Tahlin, at last prepared; "READY!"

A Blue disks flew across the firing range and Romal's first shot actually missed. Silently cursing himself, he tried to not let it bother him as he aimed and fired at the other disks and he was doing quite well, but he did miss several other disks. Romal had missed five disks.

"I'm just not as good as I used to be, Tahlin." Romal admitted, then turned his phaser's safety back on and placed it back on the table. "I'm sure I could improve my aim if I practiced more."

"Fifteen really is good... You're welcome to join us on phaser drills, and I'm sure I can find some grunt to watch your daughter," replied the Bajoran, giving the man a smile.

Romal thought about it for a moment, then smiled, "Sure, I would actually enjoy some phaser drills. I'll try to make it as much as possible, barring any emergencies, of course."

"You're not typical for El-Aurians, or at least those I've met," Tahlin responded after an appraising look.

Romal smiled as he headed for the exit, "I hope to never be typical, but thanks for the compliment, Tahlin." then he added before the pneumatic doors closed, "See you at the next drill."
