Mission:
S1E1: Out of the Barn
Location: Sickbay, Deck 7
Timeline: Day 3 at 0800
Tahlin entered Sickbay. Unlike most of her colleagues, she enjoyed the doctors she'd worked with. Sure, physicals were annoying, but they were necessary to keep one on the good side of both regulations and the good doctors themselves.
Bryanna smiled at the new person entering sickbay. "Good morning Lieutenant, please, come and have a seat on biobed one." She said, walking over to the biobed, and pulling out a small PADD to take notes on. "So, anything I need to know? Any recent illness, ailments, injuries et cetera?" She asked.
"Nothing to terribly pressing." Tahlin sat down. "I am Chief of Security, so you might see more of me than you could wish... Had a bit of a bad reaction to some kind of plant on my last mission before coming to Starbase 614, but I was cleared by the doctor on my last ship."
Bryanna nodded. "Good, this shouldn't take more than a few moments then." She replied, picking up a medical tricorder from the tray next to the bed, and starting to scan. She looked through the readouts as she went. Nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary, and she smiled as she finished. "Well Lieutenant, I'm happy to say you have a good bill of health. I'd like to run a few tests with regards to the allergy you had, maybe find out what caused it, or at least an idea of how to fix it if it happens again." She said.
"Would this help?" Tahlin pulled a tiny bottle from inside her uniform jacket. "I had the CMO and Engineering rig this up... See that?" Inside was a small sprig of vibrant green and blue plant, held in a micro stasis field. "We think its related to Earth mint, which I do have a bit of a reaction to, though not really all that severe."
Bryanna nodded. "That would be perfect. Would you like it back after I have microbiology do some tests on it?" She asked.
"Nope, please feel free to dispose of it... Or pin it to your desk in a stasis field, if that's your method of proving you've conquered something." She gave Voight a grin. "Anything else odd on your scans, Doctor?"
Bryanna shook her head. "Doesn't look like it. Although you do seem to have a small stress fracture in your arm. I can fix that now for you, if you'd like." She said, picking up a Bone Knitter.
"Stress fracture...? How'd that happen... Go ahead."
"Can happen at anytime, usually not painful, it's more a crack in the bone than a break, usually happens from minor impacts, you could have had it for a while, and not even known. Very common things to have in Security. This shouldn't hurt a bit." Bryanna said, moving the Medical Device over the area of the issue. A few moments later she said "There we go, all done." Giving a small smile, she did another scan to check it was all sorted.
"Thanks, Doctor--I appreciate it... I'm usually in the mess hall for a cup of tea before I turn in, if you'd like to join me sometime?"
“That would be lovely, thank you for the offer, and I will contact you as soon as I’ve found anything out about this plant.” She replied.
[Off]
Sidonie entered Sickbay; privately she thought it an odd name for a place dedicated to healing as though they were warehousing the ill rather than helping them. She stepped far enough inside the main doors and paused to look for the doctor on duty.
"Commander!" She called, smiling as she walked over. "Welcome to my lair." She said. "Here for your physical?" She asked.
"Of course," Sidonie said as she walked forward, taking in the clean and ordered surroundings. "Where do you want me?"
"Biobed two, if you could." She answered, walking over to the bed and activating it's systems.
Sidonie hopped up onto one end of the biobed and waited. She knew her body and yet, there was always that moment of held breath. Could something be lurking in the depths of her system that would change the course of her life? Not a fear. Just that moment when one acknowledged a reality greater than one's own will. Still, she would not have become a starship captain if she let such moments control her and so, she waited.
Bryanna gave a reassuring smile, as she scanned the Captain with her Medical Tricorder. "So, any concerns you'd like to tell me about Captain?" She asked.
Sidonie resisted the urge to scratch her nose. Why is it, she mused, that one's nose always itches when one could not move. Must be some sort of universal law. In response to the doctor's question, she cocked her head slightly to one side and considered her answer for a moment. "Not that I can think of," she said.
“Good.” She said, looking through the results of the scan. “Well Commander, I am happy to give you a clean bill of health. You are free to go.” She smiled.
"Thank you," Sidonie said with a slight smile as she hopped down off the biobed. "And after this reprieve, I will head on off to my next round of briefings."
[Off]
Alvar entered sickbay. It wasn't his favorite place to be, but then, who did enjoy hanging out there? In his experience, it wasn't usually the kind of place most people hung out in if they had any choice in the matter. After all, in most circumstances you generally only went to sickbay if something was wrong, from a medical standpoint, either with yourself or someone you cared about.
Bryanna looked up from the PADD she was working on. She'd just finished with her previous patient, and was just finishing the paperwork she had to do. "Hello Lieutenant Commander, how are you today?" She asked, gesturing towards one of the biobeds.
"Well," Alvar said, looking himself over, "I seem to be alive at the moment, though of course I've found it never hurts to get a second opinion on that."
Bryanna nodded. "Anything you want to tell me about? Any concerns?" She asked, starting to scan.
"Nothing in particular comes to mind," Alvar said as he took a seat on the biobed.
"Good to hear." She said, looking through the results of the scan. Everything seemed to be normal. "Well, you're looking fit as a fiddle." She said, with a smile.
"That's good to know," Alvar replied, smiling back, "though I've often wondered what the condition of an Earth musical instrument has to do with one's health."
Bryanna thought for a moment. "I have no idea." She eventually answered. "I'll have to look that one up and get back to you." She smiled.
"I will be curious if you do find anything," Alvar said. "It is interesting to see how some of our various sayings came to be."
"It is, yes. Anyway, all your scans are good, so i'm sure you want to be getting on your way, so I won't keep you any longer." She said, smiling, before taking a step back.
[Off]
Lt Jasmine Langtree was summoned, well really ordered to sickbay for a physical. She figured news of her space sickness had gotten around to the other senior staffers. Nobody wanted a science officer who got sick while scanning...
Jasmine walked into sickbay.
"Hello anyone here"? Jazzy asked.
Bryanna walked out from her office. "Only us chickens." She called back, trying to make a joke. "Here for your medical?" She asked, with a smile.
"That's right Doctor. My name is Jasmine Langtree, It's nice to meet you. I'm the new Chief science office I dare say we will be collaborating quite a bit". Jasmine said.
Jazzy held out her hand to shake in friendly greeting.
"Pleasure to meet you, Brianna Voight, Chief Medical Officer onboard. Shall we get started?" She asked, walking over to one of the biobeds.
Jazzy followed her to the indicated bio bed and took a seat.
"Okay what's first?"The lady asked.
Bryanna started to scan. "So i'm just gonna do a quick scan, to get an idea of what's going on inside. Do you have anything you need to tell me? Injuries, Illness, things like that?" She asked.
"Yes Doctor, I suffer from bouts of space sickness akin to motion sickness. I've been afflicted my whole life. Is there anything that can be done." Jasmine asked.
Bryanna nodded. "I'm sure I can find something for you. Let me go and grab it." Bryanna disappeared for a moment, before reappearing with a hypospray. "This is just a small dose of Cyclizine. Should help with the vomiting. I'll give you some tablets of the same, which you can take one of daily." She smiled.
"Thank you doctor. I am starting to feel more normal every second. So how am I doctor?" Jasmine replied.
"Good to hear! Anything else concerning you?" She asked.
"No I don't believe there is," Jasmine said. "Thank you".
"Good to hear. Your scan looks normal, and that medication should help with the sickness, so unless you have anything else you need to tell me, then you are free to continue your day, and any issues with sickness again, come find me." She smiled.
"I will do that Doc, thanks and Welcome aboard." Jasmine said.
[Off]
Salynn Oram finally found a spare moment to pop into the ship's medical complex for her routine transfer medical. She didn't mean to put it off so long, though being busy was no excuse - everybody was new aboard due to the recent commissioning of the ship. Part of the delay could be due to Tamar, the second Oram host. Tamar hated doctors. But Tamar was also a drama queen, and Salynn knew that and paid it little heed. Still, subconsciously, it might have been a factor. She entered the annex to Main Sickbay, and flagged down the first medical officer she saw.
"Hope I'm not being an inconvenience, but I'm hoping to get my duty examination completed?"
"Not a problem at all, if you'd like to follow me." She answered, walking over to a free biobed.
Lt Oram looked around the complex as they moved further in. Starfleet design standards meant that all the fixtures looked similar to every other sickbay she had been in, and only the layout or size was different. The Luna-class had a good sized sickbay, much larger than the Nova-class she had served on before. She wondered if the medical officers found this space pleasing to work in, much like Sal found the Crazy Horse a pleasing ship to get to fly.
"So before we start, I just want to remind you that I'm Joined," said Sal with an apologetic smile. Most doctors caught that in her medical file, and she didn't think that this doctor would be any different, but the odd time it did get missed, things got awkward. One doctor tried to tell her she was pregnant once, based on the dual brainwaves that he picked up. Congrats, it's a bouncing baby worm!
Bryanna smiled. "Of course, but thank you for the reminder, it is appreciated. So, any health issues since coming onboard?" She asked, staring to scan.
"Nothing at all. I had concerns that a faulty replicator on the transport to the station might give me ills, but a good's night rest cleared that right up. Everything else is perfectly fine." She wasn't just saying that to get out of sickbay, either. She was feeling top form, and wasn't even distracted by the scanner moving past her face. Truth be told, Sal was distracted - the doctor had a hue to her hair that Salynn envied. She wasn't as a rule a prideful person, but humans got all the good variability in their looks. She smiled apologetically when she noticed the doctor had caught her staring.
"Good to hear. So, anything else I can do for you? Or anything you need?" She asked.
"Nope, that should do it. If I'm fit to serve, then serve I shall," quipped Sal. "Thanks for making the time for me today." As the doctor gave her leave to exit, Salynn smiled ruefully regarding her lack of tact as she walked out of sickbay. It wasn't until the doors closed behind her that she realized she hadn't gotten the doctor's name. Hadn't even offered her own. Stared rudely at the doctor during the examination. "Well," she muttered to herself as she slunk down the corridor. "Hopefully my second impressions will end up better than my first!"
[Off]
It seemed unavoidable. Transferring to a new post? Medical exam. Get promoted to a new rank? Medical exam. Accept a new position at the same post? Medical exam. Forget the CO's birthday? Yeah, probably going to get a medical exam. Archer knew better than to fight the inevitable, and so he made the earliest appointment he could schedule.
Then he learned the Crazy Horse's Sickbay didn't take appointments. Ay-ay-ay!
"Hello?" If they didn't make appointments, that either meant Sickbay would be very slow or very busy. Archer stepped inside in trepidation. There was nothing ruder than infringing on someone's work area.
"Please, come on in." Bryanna called, beckoning the man over. "Here for your medical?" She asked.
Archer gave Bryanna a shy smile. Despite the fact he towered over her, there was something about this petite, young-looking woman that gave him pause. Maybe it was the knowing sparkle in her eyes that teased wisdom beyond her years.
"Yes'm," he said at length. The smile on his face faded a bit in polite concern. "Have you got any openings? I can come back later if needs be."
"I can see you now." She answered, smiling.
The doctor's sweet smile made Archer feel nervous yet welcome all at the same time. "All right, then. Lead the way."
Brianna motioned towards one of the biobeds, indicating that the new comer should take a seat on the biobed. With that, she took out her tricorder, and started to scan. "So, anything I need to know?" She asked, continuing to scan.
"No, not really," Archer said with a shrug. "I'm from Terra Nova, which has a higher radiation content than most human colonies. Some of your readings from me might differ from the norm, but nothing that should break the bell curve."
Bryanna nodded. She had noticed the increased radiation readings, although nothing that massively concerned her. "Ok. Everything looks about normal, a few raised readings, but as you said, nothing that's not to be expected with what you've told me." She replied.
The way her nose wiggled ever so slightly as she acknowledged what he'd said made Archer lapse in listening to the rest. "Uh..." No, he would not be the guy who made an idiot of himself in front of a comely doctor. "Good, good. Glad to hear it," he said, hoping she hadn't slipped in bad news at the end.
Bryanna noticed the engineer was feeling uncomfortable. "Everything ok Lieutenant, you seem to be a little uncomfortable." She said, giving a reassuring smile.
"No, I mean, yes, I'm okay," Archer said. Her smile set butterflies in his stomach aflutter. "I guess I'm just nervous around doctors. No, not doctors. You're lovely. I mean Sickbay." Realizing he'd unintentionally complimented her, Archer started blushing furiously. "What I mean to say is you are adequately kind and personable. Medical exams are just off-putting."
“Understandable, the worry of finding out something is wrong can be concerning to anyone. Even I get worried whenever I have to have an exam myself. The trick is to choose who your doctor is. If you know the doctor it can make it easier for yourself because they will try and reassure you, and make it easier for you. But anyways, you are all done, and everything looks normal. If you’d like maybe we can catch up later in the lounge, grab a drink and a bite to eat, get to know each other a bit more.” She smiled again.
Archer tried to dry swallow the lump in his throat. ".... sure. I'll check my schedule." He turned around and headed for the door, pausing briefly to turn around and say, "Bye," before continuing onward.
Bryanna chuckled quietly to herself. She realised that she'd made the young Lieutenant a little nervous, but made a mental note to arrange for a social between them.
