Fair Winds of Change

Mission:
S2E2: The Auction House
Location: USS Crazy Horse | Transporter Room
Timeline: Day 38 at 1230
A small rendezvous with the Fair Winds had been the perfect opportunity to take on new crew, something that any starship, even the Crazy Horse routinely needed. The Science and Medical department were in particular need as the Science Department was understaffed and presently without anyone qualified enough to justify heading it. The Medical Department had more of an inversion of the said problem; Doctor O'Hamlin was more than qualified to serve as Chief Medical Officer, but this most recent mission on Skunil had highlighted how easily overworked he was and how skeletal his department had become. No amount of nurses nor technicians would be enough support. The Crazy Horse needed another physician otherwise they risked losing the Chief Medical Officer, not because Chester was unhappy, but because a man could only take so much stress and pressure.
J.J. had been on the Bridge when he was informed that the Fair Winds was reporting ready to transport. 'Two birds with one stone' was an apt idiom to what was in the works. Two officers had requested a transfer from the USS Nightingale several weeks ago. One actually had requested a transfer to serve as Chief Science Officer. The second was a general request for transfer also from within Nightingale's Science Department, but the man's background and expertise led Lieutenant Joral to accept the man's transfer, but relocate him to a more appropriate position: Assistant Chief Medical Officer.
"Lieutenant Syndel," Jodon called out to the Ops officer before he stepped into the turbolift. "Inform the Fiar Winds we will be ready for transport momentarily, and please, accompany me to the transporter room. We shall welcome our new officers personally" the First Officer said with what could best be described as a chipper tone.
"Aye Sir." Larissa tapped out a message to the fair winds then secured the Ops station and headed to the turbolift.
The trip from the bridge down to the appropriate deck only took a few moments. J.J. was still getting to know the crew, especially those who had not been aboard all that long themselves such as Syndel. The Orion was an excellent officer and she had proven to be valuable when it came to Skunil. "The Crazy Horse has been needing to fill some vacancies recently," he said to the Orion as he attempted to make conversation yet also explain his request of her services. "The Quartermaster is out with a case of Arethian flu. Doctors Gallagher and Ruseka have quarter assignments already," J.J. added as he handed over a PaDD to Lieutenant Syndel. "I normally would have asked the Quartermaster or Counselor to join me, but you'll do just fine."
"I had noticed we were a little short handed in a few important places," Larissa said as they left the turbolift, she flicked through the Padd; it was all routine stuff. "As for having me here instead of the quartermaster, part of our job is helping new crew onboard, from the lowest ops officer to chief any of us realistically could do it."
"True," replied Jodon as they exited the lift and proceeded to the transporter room. When entering, the transporter operator stepped away from their console at the sight of the First Officer and Chief Operations Officer. "I thought you'd be a good welcoming part" J.J. added looking at Syndel.
"Inform the Fair Winds that we are ready for transport" he instructed, gesturing for Syndel to take up position behind the transporter console. "Energize at your discretion, Lieutenant."
Slipping smoothly behind the operator console Larissa powered it up and quickly checked the transporter system, everything checked out so she started the transport process. "Energising."
Soon, the transporter chamber illuminated and the pads sprung to life as the shape of two humanoid individuals and a small canine began to take form. In a matter of seconds the loose luminescent forms began to take more sold shape, features became more distinct, and the transporter effect faded. Two human males and a pug stood there on the pad.
"Lieutenant Jodon Joral, First Officer," he said stepping forward and introducing himself. He turned and gestures with his hand towards the Orion woman. "Lieutenant Larissa Syndel, our Chief Operations Officer."
Most individuals didn't even think about being transported. Kiernan Gallagher wasn't like most individuals. Being transported didn't frighten him or even make him nervous, instead, it fascinated him. The whole process took seconds, yet the body was pulled apart molecule by molecule and put back together all within in moments. It was quite a feat of engineering and physics. He looked down briefly to see Otis sitting there, tongue out, his black eyes darting around as the pug checked out his surroundings. From Otis, Kiernan's gaze lifted to Oskar and he smiled before he turned back toward the Trill male - who was not much taller than he - and an Orion female.
"Doctor Kiernan Galla..." Kiernan took pause and remembered he also held a rank. Protocol stated that in this case his rank trumped his academic titles. After that, he could go by either. "Lieutenant Kiernan Gallagher the seventh, reporting in."
J.J. smiled and extended his hand. "It's alright, Doctor or lieutenant. There's no need to diminish your academic accomplishments" Lieutenant Jodon stated. J.J. was glad to have a Chief Science Officer aboard again. "You are doing me a favor by coming aboard" added J.J. as he had been shouldering scientific responsibilities.
Kiernan stepped off the transporter pad and took the offered hand and gave it a light shake, he followed that with a quick nod to his head. He was never good at these formalities and it showed. He always dreaded this part, introductions were never his thing, and in his book the quicker they were done the better. "I'm happy to be here and of course, happy to help," he responded.
Oskar cleared his throat. "Pleasure to make your acquaintance," the older man said with a nod. He was intrigued by the fact the starship had such a youthful looking Executive Officer. The silver haired man looked at the Orion woman. "Thank you for the safe transport, lieutenant Syndel."
"You're welcome," Larissa replied. "Haven't used a transporter for a while, surprised it worked." She smirked meaning it as a joke.
Jodon looked at Lieutenant Syndel "Don't you start," the First Officer countered shaking his head. "One of these days that thing is going to mess up and I'm going to be scrambled more than an omelet, or worse, stuck in the pattern buffers or something."
Kiernan kept a tight reign on his composure, resisting the urge to furrow his brow. The Orion lieutenant was joking, he could tell, her body language was relaxed and the smirk told him everything he needed to know. His first gut reaction was that transporters were no joke, but he just remained passive as to not make an enemy within the first three minutes of being on board.
Otis, showing all the restraint he could muster, finally had it and lifted up from his hind legs and started off the transporter pad. He went to the Lieutenant Syndel first, his nose sniffing around her uniform boots. He then looked up at the woman, his tongue hanging out.
"He likes you," Kiernan piped up, and then patted his upper thigh. "Otis, come here boy." The pug promptly turned and went to Kiernan's side.
Jodon looked at the dog and then at the Orion. "I concur. I do this Otis has taken a liking to you, Lieutenant Syndel" the First Officer said somewhat teasing the Operations Officer. He then returned his attention to the two gentlemen who had just arrived. "Perhaps if you need a dog sitter at some point, Lieutenant Syndel will be of service. I have some ship matters to discuss with you both actually. Would you like a small tour of the Blue Parrot, it's the go-to place aboard for socialization."
Kiernan wasn't sure if he would need a dog sitter in the future, Otis was pretty self sufficient - at least mostly. Plus, if he wasn't around for whatever reason, Oskar would be there and vice verse. Plus, he wasn't going to put the lieutenant in a position to watch the dog if she wasn't comfortable. Not everyone responded to dogs like humans did.
He then looked to Oskar, who gave a quick nod. "Sure," Kiernan said, giving the Trill first officer his attention once again. "Though, could we stop by our quarters first? I'd like to at least drop off Otis so he can get used to the new space." Though, he knew Otis would just find the spot he liked and go from there. It wasn't like the pug wasn't used to standard Starfleet quarters.
Oskar chuckled and bent down to scratch behind Otis' ear. "You know he's going to find a spot, lay claim to it, and snooze there for a bit," the older man said crisply. He smiled after pointing that out. Kiernan knew Otis the best. "A stop by the quarters would be helpful. I feel like a sonic shower is needed after that transport over on the Fair Winds."
Lieutenant Joral nodded. "Of course," he said handing a PaDD over to Lieutenant Syndel. "The two of you have been assigned family quarters as requested, enough space for the two of you and Otis" J.J. noted with a pleasant nod. "I will see the two of you at the Blue Parrot in oh let's call it an hour. Lieutenant Syndel can show you to your quarters and I'll make sure that all your belongings are brought over from the Fair Winds."
Kiernan nodded. "An hour will be perfect," he answered. It would be enough to freshen up and to get Otis settled.
"This way gentlemen." Larissa said after checking the Padd, she lead them out of the transporter room towards the nearest turbolift. "Do you need any special arrangements for your pet?" She asked Kiernan.
"No, Otis will be fine," Kiernan replied. The pug's bed was with their items that would be transferred over, but he knew Otis would stake out a spot and make himself comfy. Pugs were relaxed like that. He, Oskar, and Otis followed the lieutenant into their next chapter.
