Mission:
S1E2: The Plomeek Soup Conundrum
Location: USS Crazy Horse, Deck Eight - Chief Security Officer's Office
Timeline: Day 5 at 0725
Tahlin sighed, set down her coffee cup, and checked the time. She'd just had another productive meeting with the ships first officer, and now it was time to meet the Intel chief... Which she wasn't looking forward to. Still, he was a part of Starfleet, as was Intel, and things weren't what they had been in the Fleet, even twenty-five years before.
Not that she'd been around twenty-five years ago.
"Lae'Or to Aurilieus. If you have the time, I'm ready to meet with you... Deck Eight is where my office is."
Marcus looked at the Chronometer on the wall and then at the Engineer that was finishing wiring the holoprojector in the office. Standing the young Bolian smiled as he tucked the spanner into his tool box. "All done Lieutenant. Let us know if you have any problems.
Marcus nodded as he walked the Ensign to the door of the Intel Office. "Thank you, Ensign" he added as the doors opened and closed. Tapping his comm he replied to the Sec Chief Tahlin.
"LT Tahlin, This is Aurilieus. I can be at your office in about 15. If you still have time."
"I do. Thank you for agreeing to this. Any coffee or other beverage?"
"No..I'm good. See you shortly.
"Come in, please. Good of you to see me... Have a seat."
Marcus offered his hand and took the offered seat. "It is a needed meeting. considering that we will be working together quite often." Flexing his hand slightly he continued. "I guess the first questions is what is your view of Intel's mission aboard a starship."
"I view the Intelligence department as the eyes and ears of both the command team, and the larger fleet/Federation. I also view your role as assisting me in keeping this ship safe... In a sense, you and your people work in the shadows, and I and mine in the light, but there is overlap... Our enemies function in the darkness... To use a metaphor... What of your role for me?" she asked him.
'You are the arm of the Captain's intent and direction. It is your mission to provide for the safety and security of the ship and deploy offensive and defensive methods to apply that intent." He paused as if having a passing thought. "Which brings us to my next question." he stated with a smile, the slight whir of his hand barely noticeable as he flexed. "Based on my conversation with the Captain, she appears to be fully intent on utilizing me in a covert reconnaissance role, as needed. While I do not need a security team, It may be prudent to train a few of your team for covert operations...Just in case there comes a need." He flexed his hand visibly before continuing. "Ideas?"
"I think it a good idea... However, before we discuss that, I would like to know a bit more about you... Call it making sure I assign you people you can work with... I, of course, would be willing to share information about myself."
Marcus nodded. "I Was born on Magna Roma. I am the third son of a former Imperial Legate of the Imperial Senate. As the third son my future was not rosy. Unlike my two elder brothers, who became Centurions and basked in my father's name and status, I was regulated to a minor position in the Imperial legions. I became a member of the Frumentarii, otherwise known as the Magna Roman intelligence agency." He stopped and steepled his hands before continuing. " After serving several years I was offered a chance to attend Starfleet Academy and much to my Mother's agony I chose to attend."
"Upon graduation I cross-trained into the intelligence field and spent a majority of my first years as a signals analyst. Eventually I was trained for counterintelligence work and served at several of our embassy's including Qu'Onos, Romulus, Andor and others. I also served on assignments as a covert and direct action asset. More recently, I served as a instructor at the Academy until receiving my assignment to the Crazy Horse." He laid his hands in his lap, his servos whirring, as he finished speaking and smiled. He had shared nothing that the Sec Chief could not find out with her clearance. he was sure that she would have more questions.. "Does that help?" he asked.
"It does... Your hand--it is mechanical? How did the loss occur?"
"Yes. It is." He answered as he held up his hand and moved it back and forth. "I was injured in my last mission. I lost my lower arm and hand and received other injuries. Although, we accomplished our mission, causalities were more than we would have liked." He stopped and lowered his hand. "But enough about me. How is it that a Bajoran becomes a Starfleet Security chief?"
Tahlin laughed. "We're not all kava farmers and priests, you know... Some of us fought in the Occupation... I'm not old enough for that, though... I joined Starfleet because I wanted to make a better life than what I had. My father was a radical Vedek, opposed to Federation membership... Or at least, membership without significant concessions. After that drama, I wanted out. It took a year, but I did get into the Academy. I could have done a lot of things, but Security was where I felt most comfortable. I am a competent pilot, however--just ask Lieutenant Oram."
"Competency is always welcome in any skill," added Marcus with a smile, steeppling his fingers and tilting his head as if collecting his thoughts. Looking back at Tahlin he continued "So what can I do to support the Security/Tactical section?"
"Any reports or insights into hostile species you might have would be helpful... I want my people as prepared as they can be for what's out here... I'll look over my staff and assign you crew to work with who are good at blending in to a variety of environments and who have a proven record for discretion. How else may I support you?"
"That should be about everything. I will forward you an updated list of indicators of possible insider threat screenings. We still are working responses based on previous threats from the Dominion and others. " he grins slightly "While we do not expect the Changelings becoming involved better safe than sorry. Plus, with the Luna class being a "test bed" crewmembers being coerced to commit espionage are still a viable threats, especially as relates to the Tal Shiar, Obsidian Order and others."
"Do you really think the Obsidian Order is much of a threat? I know its practically in the job description for Intelligence officers to be paranoid, but I thought the Cardassian Union had done away with the Order as part of post-dominion War reconstruction?"
"Just because they change their name doesn't mean they aren't active." Same thing with the Tal Shiar. You would think after their star went nova they would have a different focus. You know what they say about old dogs and tricks..." He added, quite pleased with adding a human euphemism.
Tahlin smiled back, a little tightly. "Maybe... Best to keep an eye on both of them, I think. You would think, with the uniforms the Tal Shiar wear, they'd want help from the Cardassians... Maybe a good tailor, no? ... Its good to be working with you, Lieutenant... If that's all, I'm sure we both have a lot of work to do."
He stood, smiling as he held out his hand. "I look forward to working with you. I know that SFI doesn't have the best reputation. I hope to change that. At least on this ship."
"I hope to have a good working relationship with you, as well, Lieutenant." Tahlin rose, shook hands, then bade him out of the office, raising an open left palm in farewell.
Marcus nodded, duplicated the hand sign, turned and exited the office, his mind already on a million pending tasks.
For her part, Tahlin sat back and pondered the intelligence chief. He was an interesting fellow, but he did make her nervous... She was brought out out of her thoughts by the console chirping, signaling an incoming message from the captain.
