Personal History Marcus Gaius Aurilieus is a man driven by his own desire to exceed as his own abilities and to be seen for other than who his family is. Born the third son of a former Imperial Legate life on Magna Roma was anything but easy. Although Marcus was a good student and a good son his prospects were slim for advancement. With one brother in the Imperial Senate and the other serving onboard the Magna Roma’s first starship he had very few options. He had received substantial recognition as a member of the Frumentarii for the local legion. His skills at espionage, tradecraft and HUMINT work gave him high marks and eventually the rank of Immune. However, without a mentor or sponsor willing to introduce him to the senate his chances or anything above that rank was slim. So when Starfleet opened up class slots for the next cadet class; angry words were exchanged and at the end of the argument and with great wailing from his mother and sisters Marcus left Magna Roma with no intent of returning to either his family or his planet.

Family:
Marcus is the third son of Desimus Giaus Aurilleus and his wife Lucia. Both one of them storied Senators in Magna Roma and both played a significant role in admission of Magna Roma to the Federation. He has two brothers, both older, one is a Tribune in the Praetorian Guard and the other a Tribune on Magna Roma’s premier starship “Centurion.” He also has three younger sisters that currently live at home.

Background:
Born in one of the more prosperous provinces outside of Roma, Marcus was born into one of the most politically influential families on Magna Roma. His parents, two long serving members of the Roman Senate, were party to some of the most famous political actions involving Magna Roma, including dealings lading to the admission of Magna Roma to the Federation. Marcus' young life was full of State dinners, diplomatic duties and politics while he traveled with his parents. All of pomp and circumstance taught Marcus one thing...He didn't want that life for himself.

With his brothers already well established with help of their father’s political clout Marcus found himself slotted for following in his father’s footsteps. Even his military service with the Frumentarii was destined to enhance his socio-political ability. While he excelled at the human intelligence aspect of his military service his desire to not follow his father’s wishes became even stronger.

When the application to Starfleet that he had submitted in secret was approved his parents were shocked and after angry words Marcus left Magna Roma and his family for what he believed to be his final time. Needless to say, Marcus was accepted to the academy and not only excelled, but developed significant skills that brought the attention of his teachers and others. During his second year Marcus developed a thirst for knowledge of the Romulan Empire. The socio-, economic and military similarities between Roma and the Romulans allowed Marcus to analyze intelligence that many others failed to catch. Even though the Cardassian union was becoming a main focus for SF, Marcus balanced his training and eventually became a subject matter expert of both societies.

After Marcus returned from the uneventful cadet cruise, he was interviewed by Starfleet Intelligence and offered a position within the new career field. After more training Marcus, who had had dreams of working clandestine missions against the legendary Tal Shiar or the Obsidian order received assignment to a distant subspace scanning post, on the Romulan border, far away from any danger and excitement. For several years, Marcus served diligently until he received assignment to the SF Clandestine service and USS Rapier, an intelligence vessel.

After a year and a half of grueling training in everything form advanced intelligence gathering techniques to combat assault and LRRP patrols Marcus was assigned to the USS Rapier, a steamrunner class ship that was designed, to provide “close range intelligence and hard target assault capabilities.” The Rapier was a joint venture between Starfleet Intelligence and SF Security Command where Marcus quickly found his niche. His squad was highly trained and showed exemplary marks in all training, being utilized on some of the hardest fought missions throughout the Alpha and Beta quadrants. The Rapier was also utilized by SI as an intelligence-gathering unit and Marcus was used as a Liaison source, since he knew his way around the inner workings of the political networks, due to his family experience. Most of the missions were simple meetings with alien agents. He did spend time in several strategic locations, such as Romulus, Andor, Qo'noS and Betazed, as well as a short stint on DS9. Life was good for Marcus, but like any over sharpened blade, it would eventually lose its edge.

The mission that would change his life and career at first glance seemed to be a simple one. Meet with a Cardassian mole, pick up the package he carried and return to federation space. Unfortunately, the mission suddenly got complicated, eventually involving the Romulan Tal'Shiar, a crashed Borg scout ship and a Cardassian double agent. By the end of the mission, a Cardassian science facility was destroyed, A Federation Ambassador/Romulan spy was exposed and Marcus, in addition to losing his right hand and most of the arm, was almost killed. When the dust settled, Marcus was demoted to Lt iausJG, pulled from active field status and reassigned to SFHQ with duties on the Romulan desk. For all practical purposes, Marcus's career was over…

After Starfleet determined that the Romulan and Cardassian governments were likely to eventually expand to the Northern Expanse Starfleet intelligence decided that a significant Intelligence position needed to be established. The SI officer needed to be able speak expertly on both Cardassian and Romulan matters, have operational, strategic and clandestine skill sets and most of all be able to work independently without direct supervision from Starfleet. Luckily, Marcus fit that criteria to a tee.
