Mission:
S1E1: Out of the Barn
Location: USS Crazy Horse, Armory/Phaser Range
Timeline: Day 3 at 0800
TO: All Personnel, USS Crazy Horse
FROM: Lieutenant Lae'Or Tahlin, Chief of Security, USS Crazy Horse
Subject: Phaser Qualifications
All personnel are required, per Starfleet Regulation 12-A, to undergo phaser competency and qualifications. As you may or may not be aware, there are various benchmarks that have to be achieved, depending on your department and rank. Please see myself, or my deputy, to schedule your qualifications. Senior officers are respectfully requested to see me personally. All security personnel should have your qualifications done already, but if you wish to take part, please see me also.
Sincerely
Lieutenant Lae'Or, Chief of Security, USS Crazy Horse

Having decided to take a well-deserved break from the tide of documents flowing across her desk, Sidonie made her way to the phaser range. She was in no particular hurry nor was she the type of Captain who remained huddled in the Ready Room or her quarters. She would know this ship and took opportunities presented to her to do so. Invernian children learned their own version of martial arts from a young age along with the use of basic weapons. The early training, starting at the age of four, had gifted her with good hand-eye coordination; eighteen years in Starfleet had only served to enhance her training. Granted, she'd never be an expert marksman but then again, that wasn't where her interests and talents lay either. She could hit what she aimed at dependably though she'd rather not have to resort to their use.
She arrived at the range a minute or so before her scheduled time and looked around for the Security Chief.
Tahlin, just seeing to a minor mix-up between two of her people, noticed the captain. "I think you can solve this, gentlemen," she told the human and Andorian crewmen. "If you'll excuse me..." She tossed them an abbreviated salute and made her way over to the captain.
Saluting, she extended a hand. "Good to see you down in the belly of the beast," she said, jovially. "What can I do for you, Captain?"
"I'm here to check on my phaser certification," Sidonie said. "Things were hectic those last months on the Steadfast. It's in my mind that I might need to renew."
"Not a problem." Tahlin pulled out a PADD and looked at the display a moment. "You'll need to hit seventeen out of twenty targets, though I'd prefer higher if you can... This way." She lead Ysayne over to a booth in the corner, called up a program, then offered the woman a phaser. "When you're ready, give me a nod, Ma'm."
Sidonie took a moment to check the phaser, out of habit more than anything, and then nodded to her Chief Security officer. "Ready."
At the captain's nod, Tahlin hit a control, and a ring of holographic discs came to life. Flying at various angles, they headed for Ysayne's position.
She missed the first one as she found her rhythm. Having grown up performing Invernian martial arts which mixed gymnastics with the more typical moves, there was a poetry to the moves which Sidonie enjoyed. Before long, she'd forgotten about it being a test and was almost disappointed when it was over. Straightening, she turned toward the Chief of Security. "How did I do?"
"Sixteen... Really quite good, but let's try again. You only missed that first one by a hair... Shall we?"
Glad of a chance to continue, Sidonie stepped back in and began again. She was ready this time, more in the mindset of away team member than commanding officer, and caught the first one solidly in the center. As before, everything else fell away as she focused on hitting targets and moving with a graceful fluidity that was typically Invernian. When the test ended, she returned to the Security Chief, radiating the please she felt, as she said. "Better?"
Tahlin checked a readout. "Eighteen... I'd ask if you wanted a third run at it, but eighteen is perfectly fine in my book... Remind me not to ask you to play Velocity." The Bajoran grinned at her commanding officer.
Sidonie smiled back. "So noted, Lieutenant," she said. "If you'll excuse me, I have other appointments this morning." With a nod, she headed out of the range.
Alvar arrived for his appointment with Lt. Lae'Or Tahlin. "Lieutenant?" he said, moving over to the Bajoran security chief and holding out a hand. "Good morning."
"Good morning, Sir." Tahlin shook the outstretched hand. "Here to get your phaser qualifications taken care of, or is there something else I can do for you?"
"The phaser certification is what I'm here for," Alvar said. "How would you like to go about this?"
"I've got a holographic range set up. If you'll grab a phaser, we can get started. I don't think it matters much what you grab, though I personally test myself on the larger Type III rifles."
"I prefer a hand phaser myself at times," Alvar said. "Don't get me wrong - I like big things like rifles - but hand phasers are what I'd probably be more likely to have on me in a crisis."
"Quite right, Commander, and I test myself on hand phasers, as well. For me, the Type III is a good testing choice because it takes more skill to wield successfully... Anyway, grab what you will and lets get started."
Alvar grabbed a Type II hand phaser and ran through the scenario. "Well, how'd I do?" he asked the security chief.
"Very impressive... You got eighteen, so nothing to worry about by regulation... That said, I'm thinking of setting up some drills for everybody to improve... Optional for most, mandatory for my staff. You'd be welcome, and if you could pass on the invite to Commander Ysayne, that'd be much appreciated..." She considered a moment. "Also, I'd like to have a meeting with you at some point--perhaps later today, once done with phaser qualifications?"
"I'm certainly happy to pass on the invite on to Commander Ysayne," Alvar replied. "If you have an idea of when you'll be done here, we can set up a time to meet, or you can contact me once you're through, if that works for you."
"As you will, Commander... Thanks for humoring me--I don't like this any more than you do."
"Hey, you're doing your job, Lieutenant," Alvar said. "I'm certainly not going to fault you for that. It's when you're not doing your job that you'll need to worry about me."
Bryanna walked into the armory. She hadn't wanted to take part again, having only recently completed it on the Aries. Unfortunately that hadn't been transferred over to the Crazy Horse, and starfleet regulations stated that she had to have an up to date record, so attend she did. She looked around as she walked in. "Am I in the right place for this training, test, thingymabob?" She asked.
"That you are." Tahlin held out her hand. "Lieutenant Lae'Or, Chief of Security and Tactical..." She looked at the human woman's uniform. "Science or Medical, Lieutenant...?"
"Medical, Chief Medical Officer, Bryanna Voight." Bryanna answered with a smile. "At least I know I'm in the right place. So, where do we want to start?" She asked.
"Well, its a fairly standard shooting drill... Twenty targets, and you have to hit thirteen of them, though I always say do more if you can... Pick a phaser--whatever you'd like... Also, when I'm done with everyone, I'll probably see you in Sickbay for my physical."
Bryanna nodded, looking through the array of phasers in front of her. She picked her normal choice, a small Phaser Pistol, the normal sidearm of most Starfleet Officers. She stepped up to the position and looked over at the Security Chief. "Ready." She said simply, taking up a relaxed firing stance.
Tahlin hit a control, and the holographic disks sprang to life. It was all up to Voight, now.
Bryanna watched as the the disks as they started to appear before her, taking careful measured shots at each. She missed one or two, but managed to get at least a glancing hit on most of the disks. Even though Bryanna didn't like or agree with violence, she did enjoy shooting, and practiced regularly in the holodeck.
Tahlin smiled as the simulation faded. "Damn, fifteen... If we were going by quality of hits, it would have been lower... You'd have made a fair security officer... If you want to keep up your skills, I'm happy to have you participate in drills--I've already passed on an invite to Commanders Yssane and Alvar."
Bryanna nodded. "As long as I'm not expected to actually shoot anyone. I'm not a violent person, hence why I'm Medical, not Security." She answered, smiling.
Lt Langtree entered the armory. She thought it was high time she re-qualified with personal firearms after all anything could happen on an mission at any time. It was far better to be prepared than to be caught. Besides she had been on that transport for the last 6 weeks groping her way slowly to this assignment. She was pleasantly surprised that the Chief of Security was a Bajoran woman. She had known only formidable Bajoran women they were as tough as Klingons.
"Hello I am Lt Jasmine Langtree, chief science officer and I am here to re-certify for small arms training and qualification". Jasmine said introducing herself.
"Pleasure," replied Tahlin, saluting. "Considering I met the good doctor a bit ago, I'm assuming you're our new Chief Science Officer?"
"That is correct. I am assuming that since your Bajoran that you are Lt Lae'Or, our Chief of Security and Tactical. I am very pleased to meet you. Where do you want to start first?"
Tahlin grinned. "Thanks for remembering the proper form... Standard shooting drill..." She checked her PADD. "You have to hit thirteen out of twenty, though I always say aim for higher if you can... Pick a phaser, or I can grab you one... Shall we?"
"Jasmine had always been a pretty fair shot. Does it matter if its a type one or two?" Jasmine asked.
"Whatever you're comfortable with, though as I'm sure you know, its up to the captain or away team lead what phaser or phasers you take..." She leaned close and whispered in the lieutenants ear, "I also keep a civilian hand phaser on me pretty much all the time... Easy to slip somewhere discrete... Keeps the... Less savory elements at bay, though I've never had to use it, thank the Prophets."
Standing back, Tahlin continued at normal volume, "I'd recommend, as a senior officer, you be at least familiar with all three standard types, even if you never use them."
"I have been trained with phaser 1, 2 and 3. I have never really been in a real combat situation though. I'm a pretty fair marksman though."
"Fine, fine, good... Shall we?"
"Aye let's begin." Jasmine said.
Lt. Langtree picked up a phaser one, checked it made sure it was fully charged and then said, "Ready!"
"Am I hitting the blue, yellow or red?" Jasmine asked.
"Aim for the blue ones... And, go!"
"Blue ones, Right!"
Jasmine was ready and well rested she got off multiple hits without even breaking a sweat. And those pills the doc gave her were really helping. 19 hits..That was a new record for her..
Tahlin stood back in shock. "Lieutenant... Are you angling for my job?"
"Not at all, I get lots of practice. The shortcoming is that I suffer from motion sickness."
"Oh, charming... Doesn't sound fun... Well, we're done here--you could improve your accuracy, as some of your hits were just grazing or barely on-point, but you'll still give somebody pause."
"Meet me for a drink later at the lounge?" Jasmine asked.
"I think I can make that work... Lovely to meet you, Lieutenant Langtree."
