Mission: S1E1: Out of the Barn
Location: Ready Room, USS Crazy Horse
Timeline: Day 1 at 1000

After posing a question to the ship's computer as to Commander Ysayne's location, Alvar headed to the bridge. He arrived there to find the place bustling with activity, and managed to maneuver his way to the ready room. He pressed the door chime and waited for a response.

"Enter," Sidonie called out. Two hours into her first day in command, she was deeply immersed in reviewing crew assignments. A task she would happily delegate to her first officer once he reported in. The chair was done in a soft gray, a soothing color especially when compared to the ostentatious uniform that Starfleet insisted upon. She took a long sip of tea, her second cup, and waited to see who her visitor would be.

Alvar entered the ready room. Sitting at the desk was a female that Alvar recognized from going over the initial information on the ship was the new CO. She didn't quite look the way he'd expected from her service record, but then, who did?

"Lt. Cmdr. Alvar Othran, reporting for duty, Captain," he said.

"Welcome, Commander," Sidonie said as she set down her cup and gestured toward one of the two chairs facing her desk. Against Starfleet's odious design policies, she had insisted on the chairs, which followed the color scheme of the room beautifully, being comfortable. There were those in Starfleet who seemed to think that everyone should feel ill at ease in her presence. Sidonie was of the mind that however they felt would come from interaction with her and not the furniture. "I understand you've been assigned as my First Officer. If memory serves, you were on the Dakota? As Chief Science Officer?"

"That is correct, Ma'am," Alvar said, taking the indicated chair. "Certainly a very fascinating and rewarding position, and while I certainly very much look forward to being here on the Crazy Horse, a part of me will miss my time on the Dakota."

"It is a bit bittersweet, isn't it," Sidonie said. "I was on the Steady for twelve years. I knew every inch of that ship and everyone on it. It became home." Her gaze dropped for the barest of moments, muted colors shifted beneath the weight of her hair offering glimpses for those who understood, and then returned to the Commander. "What made you decide to make the change? From Department Head to First Officer?"

"Admittedly, there was something of a desire for...I don't want to say advancement, but in a way that's what it's about. The idea of being able to learn and see in different ways, and doing so in different positions."

"I've done that," she said, a smile fueled by memories lighting her face, "my first six months out of the Academy. "Six month rotations in Operations, Intelligence, and Security before assuming my permanent duties." She chuckled softly. "I confess to having a bad thought or two about the Captain's capabilities but in time, I saw the wisdom of understanding the ship from different viewpoints ... even if they were always very menial positions. Gamma shift in the brig listening to the brawling petty officers continue their fight via verbal insults. I told them I would let medical in until they had been quiet for an answer. You know," she said with a slight shake of her head, "they never did."

"Some people do have to learn the hard way," Alvar replied. "Hopefully, I will not be one of those types of people. Now, is there anything in particular you'd like for me to help out with to get us on our way?"

"If you could check in with the department heads," she said. "Make sure that all of our supplies are on board and that we have a full roster, that would be a big help. I've got several long meetings ahead of me."

"I can certainly do that," Alvar said. "I'm sure that the meetings are going to be enough to try anyone's sanity as it is without having to worry about anything else on top of them."

"While you do not have to attend the same meetings, you do have some briefing materials to get through." She flashed a wry grin as she added, "Starfleet does like to keep us informed."

"Yes, the bureaucratic mentality is the only constant in the universe," Alvar said. "If that's all, then I'll get to work."

"That's all," Sidonie said. "Welcome aboard, Commander."
