ON:
Xander Cash had just returned to his quarters. He had just returned from the away mission, and was excited to continue with his research. He decided to change out of his uniform. It kinda still had the smell of abandoned planet. It was not an overly bad smell. But would not be his first choice for a cologne for a first date. He got out of his uniform, and changed into sweat pants and a t-shirt.
He then walked over to the food replicator. "Computer, cheese burger and onion rings. With a strawberry milk shake." And within seconds, it was there. right in front of him on a try. Xander took the try to his desk, and looked at his computer. He sat there for a second, not sure what to ask for. Then, it hit him.
"Computer, display all papers and books and manuals written by Dr. Lewis Zimmerman." He said. The computer beeped and chirped. And within seconds the entire database of his work came up. It was quite the extensive collection. "Okay, That is a lot. WOW." Cash said. "Lets start with papers." He said. And the database arranged it's self accordingly. Then, Xander had a better idea. "Computer, arrange all Zimmerman's works in chronological order." And with a few beeps and chirps, like magic it was done.
Xander again looked at the screen. And from the database selected the very first thing written by Dr. Lewis Zimmerman. It was his Doctoral thesis called; Holographic Imagery and Data Storage: How to make it a Practical Application while maintaining a Lowest Possible Power Consumption. Not much of a title. Doesn't really roll off the tongue.
Xander knew that this might not be an easy read. He started to attack the thesis while munching on an onion ring, and taking a sip of his strawberry milk shake. To Xander's surprise, from an engineering standpoint, it was brilliant work. Xander learned so much about holograms in just that thesis.
After he was done the thesis, to his surprise, his mind hungered for more. So, the next text on the list was a paper Dr. Zimmerman wrote for the Daystrom Institute. It was called; Scientific Fundamentals on the Complex Holo Matrix. Xander started to read through the paper. It was proving to be as interesting as his Doctoral Thesis. Xander reached for his plate. When he grabbed nothing, he took a look to see that all the onion rings were eaten. And, he also realized that he finished his strawberry milk shake. This made Xander sad, just a little. He had an important choice to make. He could either grab more snacks. or, go to bed. (Xander did look at the clock. It was starting to get late.) decisions, decisions.
Xander opted for option number 3. He took his plate and glass to the food replicator, and put them in. Which they both shimmered away. Then, he said...."Computer, 50 year old Scotch. Single malt. room temperature. Neat." And then, after the chirps and beeps, a snifter of Scotch appeared. Xander took it and returned to his desk.
He looked at the glass. "Oh, what a pitty you have to be synthahol." Said Cash. "I wish our replicates served the real thing." Then, he thought about it for a second. And then smiled. "It would be a simple operation to make the adjustments to make the replicates serve real alcohol." Said Xander. "All I would need to do is make a few tweeks.....Change a few logs.....get busted using my own command codes.....then, never hold a post like this again. I think I will just stick to the synthahol." Said Cash turning back to his reading. " It may be swill. But, it's safe swill."
Taking a sip, Cash went back to his reading. Xander tore through it. This one was slightly more detailed. And he needed some assitaince with the math and principals. But Xander did manage to get through it with a much better understanding of the subject matter in the end.
After the paper, Xander's eyes were tired. He had finished all his Scotch and his paper. He was now ready for bed. Xander knew that he was on the right track. But, he needed to do more research. Lucky for him, this was a newer ship. Holo emitters were everywhere. That would help greatly when it came time for experimental trials. And with that, Xander went to bed.
