Who's Afraid of Security?

Mission: S1E3: Visit to Starbase 375
Location: USS Crazy Horse, Chief Security Officer's Office
Timeline: Day 1 at 1000

Tahlin sighed and set down her coffee mug. She hated this bit--having to debrief with her people, and, in this case, give Rickman a talking two. She supposed she couldn't really blame him for his actions--not really. They were dealing with unknown aliens, and sometimes, fear of the unknown overrode common sense. Still, he'd had been impulsive, and she needed to remind him that actions have consequences.

PO3 Todd Rickman came in a bit early. He kept thinking he was in trouble but so far nothing had come of it. It's not like he did anything wrong, I mean being knocked out by someone with strange mental powers wasn't exact;y his fault. How was he to know?.

"Good morning, Lieutenant" Todd said.

Zhen Yi arrived right after him. “Lieutenant,” she said, nodding to the Chief.

"Good morning... Take a seat--we're just waiting on the others."

As if on cue, Mendyar, Jeffries, and Mac'Kensey came trooping through the door. Tahlin greeted them, gesturing them to empty chairs. The two humans and one Benzite sat, waiting.

Todd had been expecting a good chewing out ever since they got back. Its not every security guard that looses not one but two prisoners. In the old days of the cavalry there was a regulation that said that if you lose someone in your custody then you have to suffer whatever the penalty the prisoner was sentenced too. It was a good thing Starfleet wasn't that harsh still it would be a blot on his already spotty record. He would be retiring a PO3 at this point. He fully expected to lose a stripe over this. How did one prepare for a telepathic species? he wondered.

Tahlin surveyed the gathered crew before her. "Doubtless," she began, "You're wondering where Ensign Blackfeather is? She spoke to me, and will be transferring to another post once we reach DS20... Now that that's over with, I want your thoughts--what did we do wrong with the Blackwell incident?"

Todd stood up.

"Sir, We went in without knowing what we were up against. We were never briefed that the prisoners had superior mental and telepathic abilities. I'm not making excuses. I'm just saying we were unprepared for that eventuality." Todd said.

"I agree--this whole thing smells of rot... I'm not at liberty to discuss much with you all, but I believe we're on our way to investigate just what the hell is going on... Anything else?"

“It didn’t even occur to me, to us I suspect, that they might die from how little we handled them,” said Yi. “Whether that’s from a lack of information, or if we should have acted more cautiously regardless...I don’t know.”

"WE kept them apart because together they were able to do things that imperiled our mission. Apart they couldn't. I don't consider that to be a wrong decision. Though lives were lost until we learn how to contain them, that species presents a clear and present danger, Ma'am." Todd said.

"Respectfully, I have to disagree," replied Tahlin, Evenly. "They were already looking poorly aboard the Blackwell while in separate cells... Under the circumstances, I can't exactly blame you for your actions, but I still don't like it." The Bajoran nodded to Yi. "Good analysis, Mr. Zhen... Unless anyone has anything else, just one more thing. We're getting an assistant chief, a Catian Lieutenant. I trust you'll be able to work with him the same as you would me."

"I always work well with people. I didn't like what happened either. But at the time I thought it was the right decision." Todd said.

"Fair enough... You're all dismissed."

"Yes, ma'am." Yi nodded to Todd and the Chief of Security and hurried out of the office.

"Mr. Rickman, could I have a word with you, please?"

"Yes Ma'am?" Todd asked.

"As I said, I can't blame you for your actions with the prisoners. However, you need to think before you act. That could have saved those two. And, questioning Captain Burns' and his crews' competence... Unacceptable. Do you understand me?"

"Crystal clear Ma'am" Todd replied.

"All right... I'll let it go with a warning this time, but consider yourself warned, and next time, think before you act."

Todd thought to say something about being under an officers supervision but thought better of it. Truth be told, he did feel responsible for what happened, and was still a little shaken by the experience. Besides he was expecting to be rebuked.

"Aye Sir" Rickman said somewhat contritely.

"Good... You'd best be going, before I change my mind about an official reprimand in your file... You'll learn, Petty Officer."

Mr. Rickman left her LZ as fast as he could.
