Flight to the Ivory Tower

Eyes drifted over the clock atop his nightstand. Kieran sighed as he gazed through his port, rubbing his eyes. Stars drifted past as the vessel cruised through warp, Sherlock remained fast asleep on his chest. He blinked for a long moment, silently reflecting over what he’d left behind on Earth. Had this been the right chance? He passed over several offers, although it was questionale if this would be the most fitting. Chief Diplomatic Officer had a silver-lined ring to it, but he wasn’t always one for titles over himself. Respectably towards others, yes. That was part of his job. He only worried if there would be ample enough opportunity to use his experience.
DeVala had promised him a unique opportunity. No matter the conditions, he wondered exactly what strings the lady had pulled for this opening. Who she had contacted, or worse, pressed. You never crossed Victrix. If there was one thing he would credit the woman — she always got what she wanted. Always. Whether that was through the front door, or kicking you out the back as you screamed. Even after she left on brief assignment, he continued to wonder, absently watching over her residence.
A great piece of him missed his friend, hoping she was safe. Was she achieving everything she’d been tasked with, or hoped for? KT hadn’t been let in on the full details of her mission, however knew she was heading to the far South. A region which hardly considered ever a trifle to discard. It was perilous. Not unlike the foreign vacuum he would soon head into. Virtually unknown, so far as the Federation was concerned, and for the most part away from their guardianship. Resources were stretched beyond the point of exhaustion, and supply lines were all but holding onto tattered fringes. Had this been why the Crazy Horse was being dispatched?
Overhead a melodious bell resonated from the ceiling as the morning news glimmered a wake-up call for the passengers. “Good morning, all! Today is a bright day, and we’re expecting smooth travel here on out. In just eighteen minutes we’ll be arriving at the port of Blue Horizon. Our hosts at Triton Lounge are now serving a delightful breakfast for you. We hope your stay aboard the Osaari has been spectacular. Don’t forget, our tour concierces will be on hand throughout your meal to register landing excursions for the Da Vinci Falls which is sure to be a memory. Lastly, for those of you connecting aboard flight 226 on the partnered courier, we are pleased to inform you that your passage to Starbase 375 is currently marked as on-time. That’s all for now; we hope you have a wonderful day!”
Kieran didn’t know what form of caffeine the activity director was on, but the lady was always chipper. Someone he appreciated throughout his stay, and got along swimmingly with. Although he didn’t know her name, it was another reminder that friendly people were often where you least expected them. He was glad to be able to experience the liner, even if it hadn’t been the most savoury or engaging of outings he’d been on. Under another moonlight…
Loose scratches fell upon the sheets as his chest rose with the gentle breaths. Sherlock yawned, his tongue curling as the pup stretched with a tiny yip. His tail immediately began wagging as the diplomat placed a light hand atop the dog’s fur, petting him softly as he looked over. Yet one last happy moment of being a free person on leave as the Klee Kai lapped at his face, overly ecstatic to see him. He was small, chiefly for a puppy, but no less affectionate for someone who appreciated him most. No doubt he would become a welcome staple in an otherwise lonely journey, until Kieran became well-acquainted with the rest of the crew.
