Reduced Power (Grey) Mode

Created by on 03/12/2019 @ 7:04pm

An alert status used aboard Federation Starships. When in Gray Mode, the starship runs on reserve power, cutting power to non-essential decks and ship systems. This mode allows for maximum power conservation, budgeting a starship's energy resources in time of crisis while still maintaining an operating status. Gray Mode can be invoked during a massive fuel shortage or when the tactical situation requires a reduction in discretionary energy usage.

During Reduced Power Mode:

- Level 5 diagnostic analysis is performed for the entire ship and results made available to Captain, XO, Chief Engineer and the Operations Manager. The analysis helps to determine an overall energy budget for the ship, to help plan power allocations that will minimize operational compromises.

- The warp core is brought to cold shutdown if the ship is not traveling at warp. Exceptions include situations where the warp core is the only remaining power source for the ship or when failure of other sources is believed to be imminent or when the Commanding Officer determines the necessity for warp velocity travel.

- Main impulse prolulsion system brought to the minimum required to maintain onboard power usage. Backup fusion reactors kept at standby but should remain offline unless necessary, at the discretion of the Chief Engineer.

- Hourly energy budget and consumption reports to be made by the Operations Manager to the Chief Engineer and the Commanding Officer.

- Spacecraft flight operations conducted in a conservative manner. If warp travel is deemed necessary, speeds greater than integral warp factors are not allowed due to lesser efficiencies at fractional warp factors (i.e., it is permitted to travel at warp 2.0 but not at warp 2.5 or warp 3.4).

- Inertial damping and structural integrity systems operate at minimum output. Only one of each generator operational unless system failure is believed imminent or unless the tactical situation dictates otherwise.

- Tactical and lateral sensors for secondary missions discontinued except where deemed essential by the Operations Manager

- Deflector systems either shut down or reduced to minimum levels for non-flight operation. Secondary deflector generators and backups brought to cold shutdown unless otherwise deemed necessary by the Commanding Officer, Flight Control Officer, or Tactical Officer. Navigational deflector to be operated at minimum power.

- Weapons systems (phasers and photon torpedo launchers) are offline unless otherwise deemed necessary by the Commanding Officer

- Shuttlebay operations are suspended

- Life Support systems are brought to minimum levels and shut down entirely on non-essential decks

- Transporter usage is terminated

- Turbolift usage suspended at the commanding officer's discretion

- Food replicators shut down. Emergency rations are distributed

- Holodeck and Holosuite usage terminated

- Replicator usage restricted for critical situations such as replicating repair tools, medicine, etc.

-Crew status survey to be conducted by Security with preparations made for contingency evacuation of part of the ship's habitable volume for environmental support conservation.

-Reduced Power Mode can occur in connection to a Red Alert.
